A fantastic cyberpunk sci-fi series on Netflix starts with a truly memorable opening quote, which many consider to be one of the best ever used in a TV show of this type.
You’ll quickly discover that appearances can be deceiving. And you’ll also find out I’m exceptionally good at my job.
Even a great opening line can be surpassed. An upcoming cyberpunk show on Apple TV is poised to do just that. This highly anticipated series promises to reignite interest in the cyberpunk genre and may even set a new standard for captivating audiences from the very first sentence.
Altered Carbon Arguably Has The Greatest Opening Quote In Cyberpunk TV History
The Netflix series Altered Carbon opens with a warning: “nothing is what it seems.” This immediately establishes the show’s complex, sci-fi tone, suggesting a future where who you are is constantly changing, bodies can be replaced, and death isn’t necessarily permanent.
As the show unfolds, the meaning of the phrase “nothing is what it seems” becomes clearer, especially as we discover that human consciousness can be moved from one place to another and even used as a weapon. Hearing that line immediately brings to mind films like The Matrix, where reality isn’t what it appears and everything is a cleverly built deception – the line perfectly captures that sense of hidden truths and lies.
In Altered Carbon, however, the line represents a physical law that governs the overarching world.
What we perceive as people – their bodies and how they look – are simply temporary vessels. The core of who a person is isn’t their physical form, but rather the collection of experiences, memories, and thoughts – their consciousness – that they carry within them. This internal world is what truly defines their identity.
Takeshi Kovacs isn’t boasting when he claims to be the best at his job. He’s simply stating a fact about being an Envoy – someone specifically trained to quickly assess any situation, no matter the time period or the person whose body (or ‘sleeve’) they inhabit.
Right away, we see Kovacs is incredibly skilled, and then things get really interesting when his mind – what they call his “stack” – is moved into a new body, a new “sleeve.” It’s a clever way to immediately show us who Kovacs is, before the show starts messing with what he looks like. It quickly establishes that his abilities aren’t tied to his body at all, but are all about what’s going on inside his head.
The first line of Netflix’s Altered Carbon is widely considered a fantastic introduction to the show’s core ideas and the main character’s central struggle – arguably one of the best in cyberpunk television. But the upcoming Apple TV adaptation of Neuromancer appears to have an even more compelling opening.
Apple TV’s Neuromancer Could Dethrone Altered Carbon With Its Book’s Iconic Opening Sentence
Apple TV is creating a series based on William Gibson’s famous cyberpunk novel, Neuromancer. The book is well-known and features one of the most memorable opening lines ever written in science fiction.
“The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.”
The power of this quote lies in how it flips a common idea – giving human qualities to technology. Instead, it presents technology as something timeless and aware. It’s also fascinating how the meaning of the line has changed over time. When William Gibson first wrote it in his 1980s novel Neuromancer, the static on old TV screens actually resembled crawling ants.
The fuzzy static that used to appear on TV when a channel wasn’t broadcasting has largely been replaced by simple black or blue screens, but it still feels similarly empty and isolating. Since many younger viewers won’t remember those flickering dots, it will be fascinating to see how Apple TV’s adaptation of Neuromancer interprets the book’s famous opening line.
The Apple TV show’s depiction aside, the quote feels strikingly accurate today. Light and air pollution have obscured the skylines of many major cities, making the sky appear dull and lifeless—like “the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.”
As digital billboards and giant screens become increasingly common in cities, and we spend more and more time looking at devices, the line between what’s real and what’s digitally created is becoming less clear.
Given how eerily accurate the first line of Neuromancer feels today, its appearance in the new Apple TV cyberpunk series is sure to be impactful. It could even be more powerful than the opening of Netflix’s Altered Carbon.
