The Grammys telecast moves to Disney from CBS under new 10-year deal
As a long-time fan of the Grammys, I must say this move to Disney broadcast and streaming properties in 2027 has me all sorts of excited! For years, I’ve been tuning into CBS (and more recently Paramount+) for the spectacle that is the Grammy Awards. But now, with ABC, Hulu, and Disney+ on board, it seems like we’re about to witness a multi-screen extravaganza!
In 2027, the yearly Grammy Awards broadcast will be shifted to multiple platforms managed by Disney for television and streaming.
As a dedicated movie reviewer, I’m thrilled to share that for the next ten years, the Grammy Awards – a musical mainstay spanning over five decades on CBS (and more recently Paramount+) – will now grace our screens simultaneously across ABC, Hulu, and Disney+. This exciting new arrangement promises a broader reach and unparalleled access to the world of music and its most celebrated artists.
As a movie reviewer, I’m beyond excited to announce that ‘The GRAMMYS’ and fresh music programming are coming to the Disney universe! In a recent statement, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. shared his enthusiasm for this collaboration. He expressed gratitude towards our long-term partners at CBS, and now he feels privileged to be teaming up with Disney – a legendary company that has always championed creators like us. This partnership signifies another significant step in the Academy’s evolution and growth, reinforcing our commitment to elevating and supporting music enthusiasts worldwide.
Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Dana Walden expressed her delight as “The Walt Disney Company joins forces with The Recording Academy to embark on a fresh, inspiring chapter in the tale of ‘The Grammys.’ We approach this collaboration with immense pride and appreciation. In today’s world, live events hold significant value for our culture and industry, and we are fortunate to have just acquired one of the finest gems, further enriching our collection of top-tier programming spanning all genres.
According to Disney, the collaboration will additionally involve creating unique music specials and television programs centered around the Grammys.
The shift in the location for the Grammys telecast coincides with a significant transformation within the Academy’s structure. Over the past few years, the Academy has admitted approximately 3,000 new female voting members while also revising some of its long-standing membership consisting of around 13,000 individuals. As many as two-thirds of the musicians who will decide next year’s Grammy winners were not part of the Recording Academy as late as 2018.
According to a fresh report from the Recording Academy, there’s been a significant rise: a 65% jump in the number of academy members identifying as people of color since 2019. Similarly, the proportion of female members has seen an increase of 27% over the same period.
Mason explained during an interview that we examine our current membership and analyze it against the dynamics within our music community – who creates the music, their gender, age, and ethnicity. Our goal is to ensure that our membership mirrors these characteristics for representation.
