The Goonies cast: Where are they now? Actors of the Hollywood classic are ‘set to return for sequel 40 years after the original’
Reflecting back on the iconic ’80s movie The Goonies, I can’t help but marvel at the lives of those who brought it to life. Kerri Green, now 57, was just a teenager when she breathed life into Andy Carmichael, a role that would forever be etched in our hearts. Her journey since then has been nothing short of inspiring; from acting in various films and TV shows to running her own production company.
It’s possible that the original actors from The Goonies might reunite on set within the next few months, given that a sequel to this beloved Hollywood film has officially been announced.
40 years following its initial release in 1985, it appears that a sequel to The Goonies is officially moving forward.
In 1985, the cherished adventure-comedy movie that we all know and love was helmed by director Richard Donner and brought to life by the skillful hands of producer Steven Spielberg.
According to The Sun, there are plans for the original cast to come together again next summer for filming, with a scheduled release in 2026.
But where is everyone? TopMob takes a look at what the OG cast are up too now…
Sean Astin (Michael “Mikey” Walsh)
Actor Sean, aged 53, transitioned into portraying iconic characters in Hollywood following his early role in The Goonies during his youth.
1993 saw him appearing in the film Rudy, while from 2001 to 2003, he portrayed the remarkable character Samwise Gamgee, the hobbit, in The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
In addition to featuring in the second series of Stranger Things, this actor was also spotted in a short segment during the opening episodes of the first season.
He has also done narration work for Netflix’s Epic Tales of Captain Underpants franchise.
In contrast to his busy Hollywood lifestyle, it’s worth noting that Sean has become the initial recognized inhabitant of Middle Earth to successfully finish an Ironman triathlon.
Josh Brolin (Brandon “Brand” Walsh)
In the movie “The Goonies,” Josh, now 56 years old, found himself thrust into the limelight of Hollywood. Following his successful role in this timeless film, he later appeared in “No Country for Old Men” in 2007.
He was nominated for an Oscar for Milk in 2008, starred in Inherent Vice in 2015 and Hail, Caesar! in 2016.
Years down the line, I found myself utterly captivated by the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The thrill of it all led me to embody the formidable warlord Thanos across the epic Avengers film series.
In 2018, he starred a huge role as the warlord Thanos in the Avengers film series.
Josh has just achieved significant recognition for his role in the Oscar-winning film version of Dune (2021), portraying Gurney Halleck, with another opportunity to reprise this character in Dune: Part Two (2024).
He also appears as Royal Abbott on the Amazon Prime Video series Outer Range.
Corey Feldman (Clark “Mouth” Devereaux)
Previously, Corey, aged 53, had started his journey in Hollywood, making appearances in films like Stand by Me (1986) and The Lost Boys (1987), before taking on the role of Mouth.
At the 2013 reunion, Corey mused, “We felt like we had the most exciting film location around.
‘Harrison Ford came and walked the caves with us. We felt like we were in Indiana Jones.’
The actor voiced Slash on the animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV series from 2013 to 2017.
Corey, the head vocalist of Truth Movement, put out solo tracks last year, one of which was his popular hit ‘Without U’.
In the year 2020, Corey unveiled a film that detailed his experiences of sexual abuse he suffered as a young actor in the 1980s.
Jeff Cohen (Lawrence “Chunk” Cohen)
As Chunk in The Goonies he truffle-shuffled his way into movie history.
In 2015, Jeff, 50, revealed how losing his puppy fat was the end of his acting career.
Originally a popular child actor, now a thriving legal professional in entertainment, had to permanently leave the movie industry as he found it challenging to continue taking on roles that stereotyped him as an overweight character.
Around town, there were approximately four overweight children, so whenever a part for an overweight character came up, the same individuals typically showed up for the casting call,” the 40-year-old lawyer stated.
‘In my younger years, I was the biggest, but when I reached puberty, it became difficult for me to continue in my career. Instead of staying chunky, I started transforming into a fitter version of myself, and unfortunately, I struggled to land roles after that.’
Jeff went on to say, “It was dreadful. I initially loved acting, but puberty had different plans for me. It felt like a compulsory retirement. I didn’t abandon acting; rather, it let me go.
Within the confines of his Beverly Hills office, now as a partner at Cohen Gardner LLC, Cohen openly displays his past with The Goonies.
Ke Huy Quan (Richard “Data” Wang)
In 2023, actor Ke Huy Quan won an Oscar, marking a significant return to stardom almost four decades since his debut in the ’80s, where he became famous for roles in films such as The Goonies and Indiana Jones.
After starring in Everything Everywhere All At Once, the 53-year-old has certainly earned a reputation as a beloved figure in Hollywood.
However he has been acting for decades but hadn’t received any major awards for his work until now.
At just twelve years old, I found myself stepping into the world of acting, playing the role of the sidekick alongside the legendary Harrison Ford in the thrilling adventure film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
The Temple of Doom movie gained worldwide popularity, even though certain audiences considered it excessively grim and violent. This film played a significant role in the establishment of the PG-13 movie rating category, designed for movies deemed inappropriate for young children but not quite suitable for the standard R rating.
Following his role in Steven Spielberg’s movie, Quan made an appearance on screen the next year in the cult classic The Goonies, a film that was inspired by a story co-written by Spielberg and directed by Richard Donner.
However, even though he played significant roles in two influential movies of our culture during that period, the Vietnamese actor found fewer chances coming his way from the mid-80s through the 90s.
In the late 1990s, he decided to abandon his acting career and instead joined the film studies program at the University of Southern California, seeking fresh avenues for exploration.
He worked as a fight choreographer on 2000’s X-Men, and he served as acclaimed Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai’s assistant director on his science fiction romance 2046.
Following the triumph of Crazy Rich Asians, Quan felt encouraged by Hollywood’s openness towards Asian talent, which led him to resume his pursuit of acting opportunities with renewed vigor.
Martha Plimpton (Stephanie “Stef” Steinbrenner)
Martha, 53, was 15 when she appeared in the 1985 classic The Goonies.
Since then, she’s been featured in a variety of films and TV series like Raising Hope and Parenthood.
Plimpton grew up engulfed in showbiz.
She is granddaughter to John Carradine, and her own parents, Keith Carradine and Shelley Plimpton, are also actors by profession.
She is also on the board of directors of A is For, a charity which seeks to advance ‘women’s reproductive rights and end the stigma on abortion care’.
Kerri Green (Andrea “Andy” Carmichael)
Kerri, 57, was 17-years-old when she played cheerleader Andy and now runs a production company.
In the 1980s, Kerri appeared in Summer Rental (1985), Lucas (1986), and Three for the Road (1987).
I’ve had the privilege of witnessing her talents grace various TV screens across my living room. From “In the Heat of the Night” to “ER,” “Mad About You,” and “Law & Order: SVU,” I’ve been a captivated fan, never missing an episode she graced with her presence.
Prior to launching her own production firm, her most recent acting role was in the 2012 movie “Complacent.
In a discussion about her character from The Goonies in 2023, Kerri shared: ‘The only parts with computer-generated imagery were the falling rocks towards the end as we fled, and the ship at the end, but everything else was genuinely physical.’
‘I think that’s one of the reasons why people still love watching it.’
John Matuszak (Lotney “Sloth” Fratelli)
In a previous tale, I’d like to shed light on the character ‘Sloth,’ portrayed in the movie “The Goonies” by the late and talented John Matuszak. He brought this outcasted Fratelli brother to life with his unique charm and presence.
Prior to his role in The Goonies, John Matuszak was a highly esteemed American football player standing at an impressive 6 feet 8 inches tall.
From 1976 to 1982, he represented the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders on the field. Following an injury-induced retirement, he transitioned into acting.
In his autobiography, Matuszak openly admitted living a rebellious life, which included drug use and heavy drinking during his time as an NFL player.
Tragically, he lost his life just shortly following the movie’s premiere, and he passed away at the age of 38 in 1989 due to a drug overdose.
