‘The Goonies 2‘ In the Works With Original Writer Returning

A new Goonies movie is reportedly in the works at Warner Bros.

As reported by Deadline, the studio is planning to adjust their approach towards established franchise series. To that end, they are developing a sequel to the 1985 adventure movie directed by the late Richard Donner.

In the sequel, Chris Columbus, a collaborator on the original “Goonies” film along with Steven Spielberg, will be responsible for writing the script for the new film’s narrative.

Apart from working on another “Goonies” project, Columbus is also planning to write the screenplay for a brand-new “Gremlins” film, following his creation of the initial script for the 1984 release.

It’s uncertain when a release date might be set or who else will join them, but there’s a strong possibility that actors like Josh Brolin, Ke Huy Quan, Sean Austin, Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Martha Plimpton, and Kerri Green could reprise their roles as the adult versions of the daring kids from the original Goonies movie in the upcoming sequel.

The Goonies tells the story of a band of young adventurers as they stumble upon an ancient pirate map leading to hidden treasure. To secure their fortune, they embark on a daring journey, constantly trying to evade a relentless gang of criminals.

For quite some time now, there have been discussions about a potential sequel. However, Spielberg stated in 2020 that it seems improbable due to him, Columbus, Donner, and his producer wife Lauren Shuler Donner not being able to discover a suitable plot for the second movie.

During a live stream to commemorate the 35th anniversary of “The Goonies”, the director of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” shared: “Chris, Dick, I (and Lauren) have frequently discussed a potential sequel. However, every few years, an idea arises but ultimately proves impractical.

The director of Jurassic Park found it challenging to come up with ideas for a sequel since The Goonies had set such a high standard in the children’s adventure genre that it was hard to surpass the original.

He said: “Until we do, people are just going to have to look at this [livestream] a hundred times!”

In 2023, Ke Huy Quan expressed interest in playing his character, Richard ‘Data’ Wang from the movie “Goonies,” again if there was a sequel. However, he questioned whether this could happen because the original director, Richard Donner, had passed away two years earlier.

After receiving the Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture award at the Golden Globe Awards for his performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once, he expressed: “Firstly, let’s acknowledge Steven Spielberg who is here tonight. Everyone should definitely inquire about him because nothing I imagined could match the greatness of the original.

I deeply regret the passing of our ship’s captain, Donner, whom I hold very close to my heart. It remains uncertain whether there will be a ‘Goonies 2’, but should the chance arise for me to reprise that role, I would gladly embrace it.

Just about a month prior to Donner’s passing in July 2021, Corey Feldman, who played Clark ‘Mouth’ Devereaux in the initial film, expressed doubts that a sequel would happen.

He mentioned: “Sean Astin and Josh Brolin are hoping for a sequel, but it seems to be a matter of those in power. Each time I felt certain that it was going to occur, I ended up being disappointed and having my hopes dashed.

Every Movie Theater Candy, Ranked From Worst to Best

27. Sno-Caps

Let me briefly summarize the point from our detailed write-up: In essence, we strongly advise against consuming Sno-Caps due to their unpalatable nature.

26. Red Vines

As a movie-goer, I can’t fathom the argument between Twizzlers and Red Vines. The mere preference for Red Vines over Twizzlers is incomprehensible, unless one hasn’t tasted a Twizzler before. To me, Red Vines taste like stale cough syrup that has solidified, while Twizzlers offer a delightful, palatable alternative.

25. Mike and Ike

At the cinema’s snack bar, there are numerous candy options related to fruits, but in my opinion, Mike and Ike is the least enticing among them. I haven’t come across a single piece that tasted fresh. No matter how they revamp their packaging, those tiny bits inside always seem like they’ve been stored in a vending machine at a bowling alley for a quarter of a century.

24. MIlk Duds

Milk Duds aren’t necessarily terrible, they’re simply… excessive. They tend to stick between your teeth and block your mouth. When you purchase Milk Duds, you’re essentially also buying an $8 drink because it’s rare for anyone to finish an entire box of Milk Duds without liquid. It’s a scientific fact that your throat would struggle with such dryness.

23. Jujyfruits

In my opinion, I’ve come across some extraordinary fruit-flavored sweets that surpass others. Unfortunately, they were the cause of a significant loss for Elaine – both her relationship and her job – as we saw in that memorable Seinfeld episode.

22. Whoppers

Malt belongs in milkshakes, not in little chocolate balls. That’s my position.

21. Gummy Bears

Generally, concession bags are quite large, beneficial for some snacks yet detrimental for others. For instance, gummy bears are enjoyable when consumed in moderation; however, have you ever finished off an entire bag of these sweet treats? Frankly, it’s simply too much gummy bear goodness at once.

20. Cookie Dough Bites

The sale of cookie dough is one of the most clever deceptions in American history. People were convinced to purchase uncooked dough! Can you imagine selling raw noodles or vegetables next? Absolutely not!

19. Welch’s Fruit Snacks

An alternative to Gummy Bears, offering a wider range of fruit flavors that taste more authentic. They boast “Fruit as the First Ingredient!” which makes it seem like you’re indulging in something healthier than usual.

18. Reese’s Pieces

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, let me share my thoughts about Reese’s Pieces – they indeed gained fame due to their supporting role in the timeless classic, E.T. However, compared to other Reese’s offerings like the Cups or Crispy Crunchy Bars, I find them a bit underwhelming. If only they sold those instead, now that would be something truly special!

17. Lemonheads

I wholeheartedly appreciate the underestimated charm of these Lemonheads. However, I must admit that their name is less than appealing to me. “Lemonheads” seems a bit inappropriate and casual for such a fantastic confectionery item. If only they were called something more enticing, they would easily secure a top-five spot on any candy list.

16. Good & Plenty

It’s undeniable that licorice, a candy, stirs intense feelings among people – some adore it, while others can’t stand it. I fall into the former category, and Good & Plenty candies at movie theaters are my favorite. The theater’s version is enormous, and since their licorice flavor is potent, eating an entire bag takes a while; by the time the trailers end, you haven’t even finished it. And here’s another bonus: They have zero fat!

15. Raisinets

Sure, they’re okay, but come on – they’re nearly fruit! Who wants to opt for health in a movie theater? That’s why you go to the movies: It’s a spot where you can munch on junk food without any worries about being judged.

14. Swedish Fish

As a film aficionado, I must admit that this movie, though distinctively Swedish, tends to lean on a single theme. Over time, the repetition of the same flavor becomes tiresome. I’m eagerly anticipating a more diverse cinematic experience that offers a richer tapestry of themes and narratives.

13. Hot Tamales

This author also appreciates another candy that people either adore or dislike. It has a delightful, crisp consistency, and it offers a revitalizing change compared to numerous other sweets which leave you yearning for water due to their excessive sweetness.

12. Sweetart Ropes

A fresh and delightful newcomer in the realm of movie snacks – and surprisingly enjoyable too. These candies don’t remind me much of the chalky SweeTarts I used to know, which were previously sold under a different name. However, even the movie theater concession stand seems to succumb to branding trends. Regardless of what you choose to call them, it’s quite simple to finish off an entire bag of these tasty treats.

11. Butterfinger Bites

I don’t know about you, but when I see that “MOVIE PACK” logo on a box, I get a hit of endorphins.

10. Dots

Dots Flavors Power Ranking:
1. Red
2. Green
3. Yellow
4. Pink
5. Orange

9. Skittles

A timeless favorite, this cinema popcorn bag, priced at around $12, serves you through a significant part of the movie. It would rank higher on our list if they hadn’t switched out the lime Skittle for green apple a few years back, making Skittles seem obsolete to me from then on.

8. Buncha Crunch

As a movie critic might say, smaller versions of popular chocolate bars often fall short compared to their larger counterparts, particularly appealing to trick-or-treaters on Halloween. However, Buncha Crunch seems to be an exception where the spinoff candy surpasses the original. Why settle for a Crunch bar when you can savor a pile of Crunchies instead? It’s hard to make a fair comparison between the two.

7. M&Ms

A timeless favorite! Most types are delightful, except perhaps the unusual cherry ones. Here’s a fun suggestion: Develop an M&M dispenser in movie theaters, similar to Coca-Cola Freestyle soda fountains. This would allow patrons to create their own custom bags, blending flavors such as plain with mint and pretzel for example.

6. Goobers

I feel compelled to be transparent about my sensitive digestive system. Normally, I should avoid nuts and seeds, but when it comes to Goobers, their irresistible taste justifies the occasional indulgence.

5. Twizzlers

Known by many as ‘The Good Red Vines’, these are likely the Twizzlers you’re thinking of. I haven’t come across any boundaries on how many a person can eat in one sitting, but I’m still exploring.

4. Snickers Bites

Among the finest candy bars available, it excels significantly when offered in bite-sized pieces. Moreover, since they come unwrapped, the gap between grabbing them from the bag and enjoying them is remarkably small.

3. Junior Mints

Come on — who doesn’t love a Junior Mint? It’s chocolate, it’s peppermint. It’s delicious!

2. Sour Patch Kids

Similar to Swedish Fish, but offering a wider range of taste options and the excitement of those tangy crystals. There’s not a single disappointing flavor among them, and a large bag for movie theaters lasts quite some time.

1. Starburst

Starburst virtually matches every movie theater’s selection of candies. With a wide range of tastes, they offer a slow-eating experience, and their appealing, long-lasting chewy consistency never clings to your teeth. Undeniably, it ranks as the top choice among all.
