The Godfather actor Robert Duvall dies at 95 after iconic performances in Apocalypse Now and The Great Santini

Hollywood icon Robert Duvall has died at the age of 95.

He was best known for playing Tom Hagen opposite Al Pacino and Marlon Brando in The Godfather.

Luciana, the actor’s wife, shared the sad news on Facebook Monday. She wrote that her beloved husband, a dear friend and highly respected actor, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family and comfort.

She shared that to the world, he was a celebrated actor, director, and storyteller. But to her, he was simply everything. He was equally passionate about his work and about enjoying life – whether through compelling characters, good food, or lively conversation. In every role he played, Bob fully immersed himself in the character and truthfully portrayed the human experience.

He leaves behind a legacy that we will all cherish and remember. We appreciate all the support you gave Bob over the years, and we thank you for respecting our need for privacy as we celebrate his life and memories.

The San Diego native worked as an actor for seven decades.

Robert Duvall started his acting career on television in the 1960s, appearing in small parts on shows like The Defenders, Playhouse 90, and Armstrong Circle Theatre.

He made his feature film acting debut portraying Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962).

He also appeared in several notable films early in his career, including Captain Newman, M.D. (1963), Bullitt (1968), True Grit (1969), MAS*H (1970), THX 1138 (1971), and Joe Kidd and Tomorrow (both 1972).

Robert Duvall received the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1983 for his performance as a washed-up, alcoholic country singer in the movie Tender Mercies.

Oh my gosh, his brilliance just overflows from the screen! It’s not just ‘Platoon,’ you guys, it’s everything he’s done! I mean, ‘The Godfather’ – a masterpiece! And ‘Apocalypse Now’? Forget about it, totally mind-blowing. He was on fire in the late 70s with ‘The Great Santini‘ too! Then, years later, ‘The Apostle’ just wrecked me emotionally, and ‘A Civil Action’ was so gripping! Even his more recent work, like ‘The Judge,’ still has that incredible depth. Seriously, the man is a legend, and every single one of those films deserves all the praise in the world!

Other well-known films featuring his work include The Outfit (1973), The Godfather Part II (1974), The Conversation (1974), Network (1976), True Confessions (1981), The Natural (1984), Days of Thunder (1990), Rambling Rose (1991), Falling Down (1993), The Paper (1994), Sling Blade (1996), Gone in 60 Seconds (2000), Open Range (2003), Crazy Heart (2009), Get Low (2010), Jack Reacher (2012), Widows (2018), and Hustle (2022).

Duvall has been married four times but did not have any children.

Robert Duvall first met his wife, Barbara Benjamin, while filming ‘To Kill a Mockingbird.’ They were married for eleven years, from 1964 to 1975.

His second wife was Gail Youngs, to whom he was married from 1982 to 1986.

His third marriage was to Sharon Brophy, a dancer, from 1991 to 1995.

In 2005, Robert Duvall married Luciana Pedraza, whose grandmother, Susana Ferrari Billinghurst, was a pioneering figure in Argentine aviation.
