The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo TV Remake Confirmed By Sky

Fifteen years after David Fincher’s popular movie version, a new TV series based on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is in the works. The series is based on Stieg Larsson’s 2005 novel, which has been adapted for the screen several times. The story centers around a hacker and a journalist who team up to solve a decades-old cold case: the disappearance of a wealthy man’s grandniece forty years prior.

After the first film did so well, Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist reprised their roles in the next two movies based on Larsson’s books: The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest. The original story was then remade in America in 2011 by David Fincher, starring Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig, and it was also a success with both critics and audiences. Later, the series got a fresh start with Claire Foy taking over the role of Lisbeth Salander in The Girl in the Spider’s Web.

According to Variety, Sky, a UK broadcaster, is developing a new TV series based on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Filming is expected to begin in Lithuania this spring. Steve Lightfoot, known for Spider-Noir, and Angela LaManna, who worked on The Haunting of Bly Manor, are writing and executive producing the series. Sony Pictures Television will handle distribution outside of the UK.

Despite the success of David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, efforts to continue the series on screen have repeatedly failed. Originally, Spider’s Web was intended to be a direct sequel, comprised of two parts – Played with Fire and Kicked the Hornet’s Nest – with Fincher, Rooney Mara, and Daniel Craig all set to return. The idea was to film both movies back-to-back, but those plans were abandoned for a fresh start, and the reason for the change remained unclear, aside from the significant delays.

After the 2018 movie failed with both critics and audiences, the future of the franchise looked uncertain. However, in mid-2020, Prime Video announced a Girl with the Dragon Tattoo TV series. Like the sequels director David Fincher had planned but later abandoned, the series faced numerous delays. In late 2023, Veena Sud, known for The Stranger, became the showrunner and told ScreenRant in early 2024 that she aimed to capture the intense “female rage” present in Stieg Larsson’s original novel.

Veena Sud notes that the themes explored in Stieg Larsson’s books – like female anger, abuse, and the rise of racism and white nationalism – feel incredibly current, even though the trilogy was published 20 years ago. She’s particularly drawn to telling the stories of unconventional women, and is excited to continue doing so.

Alongside the news about the upcoming remake, reports suggest that the previous attempt at a Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series was cancelled. Sony has now shifted focus to a new partnership with Sky. This new series appears to be much further developed than previous efforts, with a production timeline already in place and casting announcements expected soon. It will be interesting to see which international streaming services pick up the series, as Sony Pictures TV typically works with Netflix and Prime Video, but has also partnered with platforms like Apple TV+ and Peacock.
