After nearly 40 years, a beloved science fiction action story is finally being adapted into a movie that stays true to the original. A recently released trailer gives a glimpse of the exciting, action-packed film fans have been hoping for.
This new adaptation of “Ghost in the Shell,” based on Masamune Shirow’s 1989 manga originally published in “Young Magazine” by KODANSHA Ltd., aims to be the most accurate depiction of the source material yet. Produced by Science Saru, it tells the story of cybernetic Major Motoko Kusanagi as she battles cyberterrorists in Hong Kong, set in the mid-21st century.
The new adaptation of Ghost in the Shell truly captures the spirit of the original manga, bringing its futuristic technology – like the AI ‘think tanks’ and Fuchikoma – and characters to life in a way fans have been waiting for decades to see. While the story has been adapted before, both successfully as animation and less so in live-action, this version appears to be the most faithful yet. The footage suggests a visually stunning series with a vibrant color scheme, perfectly capturing the aesthetic of the 1990s manga that inspired it.
As a huge animation fan, I was really excited about the new Ghost in the Shell series. It’s directed by Moko-chan (also known as Touma Kimura) and written by EnJoe Toh, and comes from the incredible studio Science Saru – you might know them from shows like Inu-oh, The Colors Within, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, and Dan Da Dan. This version adapts a really important piece of cyberpunk sci-fi. The story is set in the near future, where the difference between AI and human minds is getting seriously blurry. It follows Motoko Kusanagi, a cybernetic investigator, as she tries to crack a strange case involving network crime and terrorism, and the culprit isn’t even human – it’s a super-intelligent, non-organic being!

Starting as a manga in 1989, Ghost in the Shell has grown into a large franchise with anime films, live-action movies, sequels, and video games. It’s also heavily influenced popular Hollywood blockbusters like The Matrix and James Cameron’s Avatar, and is now introducing a wider audience to the story behind its lasting impact.
The anime series Ghost in the Shell will premiere in July 2026, and Amazon will be the only place to watch it globally.
