The Gap x Malbon Invitational Showed Where Golf Is Going

We attended the inaugural Malbon x Gap Invitational, which took place at Plainfield Country Club in New Jersey. This is a private course designed by Donald Ross, known for its prestigious history, having hosted several PGA TOUR events and a major USGA tournament more recently. The event had a unique feel compared to Malbon’s usual golf experiences, as Gap played a significant role in its organization.

The branding was tastefully well-balanced: subtle yet purposeful. A unique banner adorned the base of the Plainfield Country Club entrance sign, a rarity at such traditional clubs. Custom tee markers, jointly branded flags and drinkware breathed life into the identity without overwhelming the surroundings. Despite not being the most lavish Malbon event, every detail seemed thoughtfully chosen.

The duo, Gap and Malbon, took advantage of the moment to unveil their exclusive, limited-run collection – a 33-item assortment crafted to honor classic fashion trends that span generations. Unlike previous collaborations by Malbon, this time the items were produced by Gap. The design combined the traditional flair of the vintage brand with contemporary fits: worn-out plaids, rugby stripes, faded knits, and a clever “PAR” logo styled in Gap’s distinctive serif font. However, the relaxed shapes and lowered shoulders maintained an undeniable Malbon vibe throughout.

The crowd embodied a blend of traditional roots and modern flair. Notable figures from the golf style scene such as Nikki Blades were present, along with names more familiar in broader discussions about fashion and media – Jimmy (Throwing Fits), Mark Boutilier, Davis Burleson (Whatspoppin). Even celebrity athletes like Michael Strahan and CC Sabathia joined, highlighting how the game’s cultural influence has expanded significantly.

As I dive into this captivating game world, I find myself teaming up with Swedish style icon, Jesper Parnevik, who’s known for shaking things up in the fashion industry. His kids, Peg and Phoenix, are also part of the crew, mirroring the intergenerational tale that runs deep within the game’s collection.

Instead of merely unveiling a new product line, the invitational event for Gap and Malbon served as a declaration about the direction golf fashion will take and who has influence over its development. The collection will be available starting this Friday at 12PM Eastern Time, through both Malbon and Gap.
