The Game of Thrones play is "coming along splendidly." And is there an Arya Stark spinoff in the works?

As a seasoned critic with a penchant for all things fantastical and a lifelong obsession with Westeros, I can confidently say that George R.R. Martin’s latest updates on “The Iron Throne” play and potential Arya Stark spinoff have sent my heart racing like a wild horse in the Kingsland.

The world of “Game of Thrones” is expanding rapidly these days. The second season of the prequel show “House of the Dragon” has concluded, and another prequel series titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is scheduled for release next year. It’s also been known for some time that playwright Duncan Macmillan is working on a play called “The Iron Throne”, which focuses on the significant Tourney at Harrenhal that sparked Robert’s Rebellion, the conflict that laid the groundwork for the events depicted in “Game of Thrones”.

It’s been some time since there were new updates on “The Iron Throne”, but George R.R. Martin, the creator of “Game of Thrones”, never fails to keep us informed through his “Not a Blog”. Recently, he was in London and attended MacMillan’s play “People, Places and Things”. He shared that he felt confident about the storyline, describing the play as “dark, powerful, and intense.” A few days prior to watching the play, he had lunch at their hotel and discussed “The Iron Throne” with someone.

I am told that the show is coming along splendidly. Our team did a run-through for the managers of a score of West End theatres (before we arrrived, alas, so we did not get to see it), and the excitement we palpable, we hear. We have not nailed down our opening day yet (next year, most likely), but it looks as though we will have our choice of theatres.

Without any recent updates on the Iron Throne situation, I had assumed it was being set aside for now, but it seems that MacMillan and their team have been secretly working on it all along. If they are already rehearsing for theater managers, then it is well advanced in its development. As George R.R. Martin suggests, we might just be witnessing the world’s first Game of Thrones play next year! It appears that the production will likely premiere in London initially and may expand to other countries if it proves successful.

George R.R. Martin hints at Arya Stark spinoff?

Martin additionally mentioned meeting up with Maisie Williams, famously known for her role as Arya Stark on “Game of Thrones”, over a meal of pizza and pasta. However, he subtly suggested that there might have been more to their encounter: “[We] discussed… actually, I’d rather not delve into it, to avoid jinxing it,” he penned. “Yet, it could be such an enjoyable experience.

Whenever conversation turns to potential Game of Thrones spinoffs, one common suggestion is a sequel focusing on Arya Stark, who sailed away at the end of the series. Given her open-ended conclusion among all characters, it seems fitting to further explore her journey.

Could it be that Martin is suggesting something linked to the rumors of a new Game of Thrones movie, as reported by recent news? If true, I imagine HBO might not be pleased with Martin discussing this publicly, given his history of open expression.

There’s a chance that this discussion may lead nowhere, as HBO previously worked on several Game of Thrones spin-off ideas but ultimately decided not to move forward with any of them. However, it’s worth keeping tabs on the situation since the number of potential projects is growing.
