While Star Trek is often considered the original science fiction TV show, a series called Andromeda debuted in 2000 and gained a devoted following – some fans even preferred it to the classic 1960s show. Whether it was actually better is up for debate, but it definitely had a similar feel, which isn’t surprising since it was also created by Star Trek‘s Gene Roddenberry. Now, 20 years after its finale in 2005, this often-discussed sci-fi series is available on streaming, ready to generate new conversations.
The sci-fi series Andromeda first aired on October 2, 2000, and was developed with the help of Robert Hewitt Wolfe, a writer previously known for his work on Star Trek. Wolfe built upon notes from Gene Roddenberry to create a detailed and immersive world with compelling characters that immediately drew viewers in. The exceptional worldbuilding was a major reason fans were so enthusiastic about the show’s debut.
With a cast including Kevin Sorbo, Lisa Ryder, Keith Hamilton Cobb, and Laura Bertram, Andromeda was a unique show for its time. It was boldly ambitious and explored complex ideas about free will, spirituality, and what’s right and wrong. Right from the start, it was clear the series intended to continue Gene Roddenberry’s hopeful message about humanity’s potential to flourish in space, even with all our differences. Here’s what the show is about:
Captain Dylan Hunt, played by Michael Sorbo, and his ship, the Andromeda Ascendant, are revived after being frozen for 300 years. They discover the powerful Systems Commonwealth they used to protect has fallen apart. Now, Hunt must bring order back to a troubled galaxy, and he gathers a diverse and unusual team to help him. The series blends hopeful ideas with classic, action-packed adventure.
‘Andromeda’ Is Not Without Its Flaws

Global Television Network
Despite its strengths, Andromeda isn’t without flaws. The first two seasons are particularly strong, largely due to the creative vision of Gene Wolfe, who was essential to the show’s success. However, he left during the second season after disagreeing with producers about the show’s direction. Wolfe prioritized developing the show’s universe and long-term storylines, while the producers wanted to concentrate more on the character of Dylan Hunt, played by Kevin Sorbo.
After Kevin Sorbo left the show, Andromeda‘s quality clearly declined. It lost its focus and became inconsistent, struggling to find a clear direction. The show shifted towards standalone episodes instead of a continuous storyline, which disappointed many fans. Despite these issues, Andromeda surprisingly continued for three more seasons, exceeding most expectations.
Looking for a classic sci-fi adventure with compelling characters and thought-provoking themes? All five seasons of Andromeda are currently available to stream on Peacock, or you can watch it for free on Tubi.
