Last year, one of the most exciting action shows came from Paramount+ with MobLand. The series, executive produced by Guy Ritchie (known for Snatch and The Gentlemen), boasts a stellar cast including Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren, and Paddy Considine. Hardy plays Harry Da Souza, a problem-solver for the Harrigan crime family, led by a convincingly villainous Pierce Brosnan. With several episodes directed by Ritchie, MobLand delivers plenty of intense shootouts, sharp dialogue, and surprising plot twists. While Brosnan is famous for playing James Bond, he’s equally good at portraying bad guys, and fans who enjoy that side of him in MobLand should also check out his 2017 film, The Foreigner, where he clashes with Jackie Chan.
Directed by Martin Campbell, who also directed Casino Royale, The Foreigner features Jackie Chan as Quan Ngoc Minh, a man whose daughter is killed in a bombing by the IRA. Already having lost his other daughters and wife, Quan feels he has nothing left to lose and suspects a government official knows more about the attack than he lets on. Pierce Brosnan plays that official, Liam Hennessy, and must try to stop Quan while protecting secrets that could destroy him.
The Foreigner Is One of Jackie Chan’s Most Impressive Roles
Jackie Chan is best known for his incredible action movies, but he’s also a capable dramatic actor, though that side of his talent hasn’t always been showcased. By the time he made The Foreigner at age 63, Chan was doing fewer of the elaborate stunts he was famous for in his younger years. This allowed him to demonstrate the strong dramatic skills he’d previously displayed in films like Crime Story and Shinjuku Incident.
Driven by the loss of his entire family, he channels his grief into a relentless pursuit of revenge and violence. He appears almost devoid of emotion, completely consumed by his need to avenge his daughter’s death, and willing to eliminate anyone – soldiers or officials – who stands in his way.
Quan is a deeply emotional character haunted by a tragic past – his experiences in the war and the loss of his two daughters while fleeing their homeland. As he gets closer to finding the people who killed his last daughter, his desperation only grows.
Don’t let Chan’s age fool you – he’s still capable in this action movie. While he doesn’t do the extreme stunts he once did, like jumping from boats or helicopters, he still performs impressive action sequences and balances them perfectly with his dramatic acting. His fighting skills remain excellent, and it’s just as enjoyable watching him take on opponents now as it was two decades ago.
The Foreigner Was Actually a Massive Hit, Just Not in the United States
A key reason why The Foreigner isn’t widely known is its limited and unsuccessful initial release in American theaters. Despite featuring Jackie Chan, the movie failed to earn back its $35 million production cost in the U.S. and Canada. It also received mixed reviews, with a 66% rating based on reviews from only 125 critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite performing modestly in the U.S., Jackie Chan’s film The Foreigner was a huge success in his native China. The film earned more than twice its production budget in China alone, and combined with its U.S. earnings, the total box office revenue reached $145 million. This isn’t unexpected, given Chan’s immense popularity and wealth – his net worth is estimated between $400 and $500 million.
Even at age 71, Jackie Chan remains a popular draw in Chinese cinemas. His latest movie, The Shadow’s Edge, is a hard-hitting police drama that has earned over $150 million in China. Chan is successfully taking on darker, more serious roles, and critics are responding well – The Shadow’s Edge currently has an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Foreigner is now streaming on Netflix.
