The Force is with the US Women's Soccer Team

As a seasoned gamer and Star Wars enthusiast who has witnessed countless epic battles and thrilling victories, I must say that the US Women’s National Soccer Team is reminiscent of the resilient, courageous, and formidable women in a galaxy far, far away.

The U.S. Women’s Olympic Soccer Team is almost certain to win gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics, marking their first victory since 2008 and securing them a silver medal at least. One can’t help but wonder how these athletes compare to our fictional women from a distant galaxy!

Here are 5 players on the US National Team that remind us of our favorite ladies in Star Wars.

1. Midfielder Lindsey Horan – Jedi Master Luminara

Leader Lindsey Horan, much like Luminara, boasts an impressive history of victories, including the World Cup in 2019. Similar to how Luminara guided Ahsoka Tano, Horan now nurtures a young team as their mentor. Just as fearless as Luminara, Horan demonstrates great courage on the field, making her one of the most formidable players.

2. Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher – Padme Amidala

Alyssa Naeher plays a crucial role in the National Team, much like Padme Amidala is pivotal to the people of Naboo and the Republic. She’s strong and resilient, often rising to the occasion when necessary, similar to how Padme bravely fought during the Battle for Naboo depicted in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.

3. Forward Mallory Swanson – Asajj Ventress

Mallory Swanson, much like the enigmatic Asajj Ventress, has persevered through injuries and self-doubt, being excluded from the National Team on multiple occasions throughout her career. Similar to Ventress, both the Sith and the Jedi have questioned her abilities during her lifetime. Yet, just like Ventress, Swanson remains unyielding when it counts, amassing 37 international goals.

4. Forward Trinity Rodman – Sabine Wren

Trinity Rodman’s development into the player people expected took some time, mirroring the growth of Sabine Wren from Star Wars’ Mandalorian series, who gained the faith of Kanan Jarrus and Ahsoka during the Rebellion. Similar to Sabine, Rodman has frequently come through in the clutch with a last-minute goal, such as against Japan in the quarterfinals.

5. Defenseman Naomi Girma – Ahsoka Tano

Both Naomi Girma and Ahsoka Tano exhibit resilience, determination, and bravery. After the setback at the 2023 World Cup, Girma has shown remarkable growth, mirroring Ahsoka’s redemption following the downfall of the Republic. However, what truly stands out about Girma is her unwavering composure during hardships, which has significantly contributed to her national team’s Olympic journey. Among all characters in Star Wars, none exude a steadier presence than Ahsoka.

As a seasoned athlete with years of training and competition under my belt, I can confidently say that this Saturday’s match against Brazil for the gold medal is one of the most significant moments in my sporting career. The opportunity to stand on the podium and claim Olympic glory is a dream come true, and I am willing to draw upon every ounce of strength, determination, and skill to make it happen. In the heat of battle, I may find myself calling upon something beyond myself – a higher power or force that has carried me through countless challenges and triumphs throughout my life. It’s not just about winning; it’s about honoring the journey, the sacrifices, and the support system that have brought me to this moment. I am ready to give it my all for the chance to etch my name in history as an Olympic champion.
