The Force is with David Tennant in Young Jedi Adventures, Season 2

As a gamer who grew up with Doctor Who and Star Wars, I must say that the latest addition to Disney+, “Young Jedi Adventures,” Season 2 has been a delightful throwback to my childhood. The crossover of David Tennant’s iconic performance from Doctor Who to Star Wars in episode 4 was nothing short of brilliant!

“Aren’t you ever different?” This phrase, uttered by Donna Noble to one of David Tennant’s memorable TV characters, pops up as Disney+ launches the second season of “Young Jedi Adventures“. The Star Wars TV show chronicles the journeys and life lessons of three Jedi apprentices and their companions, and enthusiasts of Mr. Tennant can delight in a classic performance in episode 4.

A familiar face

In the Star Wars universe, Tennant is recognized due to his portrayal of Ahsoka. On August 22, 2023, a series titled “The Post-Endor Chronicles of Anakin Skywalker’s Former Apprentice” debuted on Disney+. Rosario Dawson took the lead as the character, who was on a mission to locate Grand Admiral Thrawn. Accompanying them was a silver droid named Huyang, who adhered to Jedi rules even decades after the Order’s downfall because “I follow my programming.”

Expressing that Huyang possesses a mechanical aptitude isn’t limited to the fact that he’s a droid; rather, he demonstrates an uncanny ability to detect issues within starships and boasts comprehensive understanding of lightsabers.

Having spent countless years in the service of the Jedi Order, I can confidently say that my time instructing younglings has been both enlightening and humbling. As a veteran droid, I have witnessed the growth and development of countless Padawans, each with their own unique abilities and potential. When I encountered this pirate in the heat of battle during the Clone Wars, I could not help but defend the younglings under my care.

This ancient droid is even rumored in the book Brotherhood to have “arrived at the Jedi Temple in a big blue box thousands of years ago.” Whether the TARDIS did drop Huyang off or not, he is an essential part of Jedi history. Kevin Erdmann of Screen Rant explained just how historical he is:

According to the Star Wars: Timelines reference book, Professor Huyang is approximately 25,000 years old, having been created by the First Jedi during the creation of the very first lightsabers.

Knowing Nubs

It’s not unexpected that he met Kai, Lys, and Nubs, considering his extensive experience. In “Nubs Makes a Mistake,” the young Pooba discovers motivation from a carving of a Pooba Jedi Master in an ancient temple. He even finds the Jedi’s lightsaber and obtains Master Yoda’s approval to accompany him to the Jedi Temple for the saber’s repair.

The situation becomes intricate when, unintentionally, he triggers an accident that results in him losing his lightsaber and a stabilizer to a ravenous plant. Nubs feels disheartened, believing he isn’t measuring up to the esteemed legacy left by Pooba who preceded him. Even Master Yoda’s empathetic words fail to comfort him.

Introducing the extraordinary David Tennant, who once declared in nine centuries of time and exploration, “I’ve never met anyone who wasn’t significant before.” Slipping on his intelligent spectacles (a monocle being the exception here) and seemingly employing a sonic screwdriver, he skillfully repairs the antique blade and hands it over to Nubs for activation.

Having grown up with a blend of science fiction and classic cartoons, I must say that this moment is truly befitting for the character who embodies both worlds – The Doctor and Uncle Scrooge McDuck. For someone like me who has spent countless hours immersed in their respective universes, it feels surreal to witness such a unique fusion of these two iconic figures. And now, with the entirety of their subsequent adventures readily available on Disney+ as of August 14, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic excitement that transcends time and space.
