Several films – Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, The Secret Agent, and Sinners – are vying for a historic Oscar, as they are all contenders in a brand new category that has never had a winner before.
The Oscars announced in February 2024 that they are adding a new category to recognize outstanding casting work. This year’s ceremony will be the first to award this prize, making the winner the inaugural recipient.
Okay, so like all the awards, everyone in the Academy gets to vote for the winner. But this one’s a little different – it was actually the casting directors themselves who picked who gets to be nominated in the first place! It’s cool to see them get that kind of recognition.

This is the first new Oscar category added since the Best Animated Feature Film category was created in 2001. However, another new award – recognizing Stunt Design – will be introduced in 2028, meaning we won’t have to wait long for the next addition.
While a formal Oscar for casting hasn’t been awarded until recently, the Academy did give an honorary Oscar to casting director Lynn Stalmaster in 2017. He was a legendary figure in the industry, known for discovering stars like Christopher Reeve and Richard Dreyfuss, and received the award at the Governors Awards.

In 2024, the Academy announced a new award recognizing casting directors, acknowledging their vital contribution to filmmaking. Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang stated that this addition reflects the Academy’s ongoing evolution and commitment to celebrating all aspects of the craft.
We’re thrilled to celebrate this important achievement with our Casting Directors Branch members, and we appreciate their hard work and dedication throughout this journey.
The film Sinners has already made Oscars history with an impressive 16 nominations. This breaks the previous record, which was held by films like All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land.
The 98th Academy Awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, March 15th, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Viewers in the UK can watch it on ITV.
The latest issue of Living Legends is now available, and it’s dedicated to the incredible Dolly Parton! You can purchase ‘Dolly at 80’ at newsstands or online for only £8.99.
