The five best horror offerings coming to Shudder the first week of October
As a horror enthusiast who’s spent countless sleepless nights huddled under the covers, I can confidently say that the upcoming lineup on Shudder has my heart racing with anticipation!
Kickstarting the first week of October, Shudder is amplifying their streaming platform with 24 fresh horror titles, and we can’t wait! This month, Shudder is serving up a diverse selection of chills, including a renowned horror franchise and a movie by Mike Flanagan that has been elusive lately.
Hey there fellow gaming enthusiasts! Just wanted to remind you about the spine-tingling Season of Screams that’s taking over Shudder right now and runs all the way up until December 13. While we don’t have all the details yet for the whole season, we do know it’s going to be a horror-filled ride from September through October – so get ready to huddle under those blankets as you dive into some chilling content in the upcoming months!
As a gaming enthusiast, here are the top five updates I can’t wait to dive into, all set to drop on Shudder starting October 1st. However, there’s one exceptional addition that won’t be released until a later date, which I’ll make sure to highlight separately.
Initially, I wasn’t aware of The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula Season 666, but my interest peaked when Dragula: Resurrection premiered on Shudder in October 2020. This abbreviated “season” was a single, extended two-hour episode, produced under COVID restrictions by the contestants themselves. From that moment, I was captivated.
Following the completion of the initial three series, I’ve kept myself updated with all things related to Dragula. I eagerly anticipate each new season because it offers an exciting blend of fantastic, gory costumes and makeup, exhilarating challenges, captivating competitors, and highly entertaining floor shows.
As a thrilled gamer in the Dragula scene, I’m excitedly announcing that the participants for season six, along with our esteemed special guest judges, have been revealed! The Boulets assure us that this year’s competition will be bigger and better than ever before. If you haven’t caught up yet, all five seasons of Dragula, plus Dragula: Resurrection and Dragula: Titans are ready to stream on Shudder. Let the games begin!
I recently watched “Hush” during its extended stay on Netflix, but struggled to find it on DVD or Blu-ray (as I still prefer traditional media formats). I was disappointed when it was removed from Netflix last year, but was delighted by the director’s recent announcement that “Hush” would return to streaming and also be available in 4K resolution starting in November.
In this rephrased version:
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my admiration for the gripping movie titled “Hush.” Mike Flanagan, as always, pours his heart into this work, and he manages to make us ardently support Maddie. Intriguingly, she collaborated with her husband on the script, and it ranks high among my favorite projects of Flanagan’s. If you happened to miss it on Netflix, I strongly encourage you to rectify that oversight come October 1st.
2014’s “The Houses October Built” is a horror movie that ventures into a fresh genre trend – something amiss in Halloween haunted houses. This film, classified as found footage, follows the journey of five enthusiasts of such attractions embarking on a road trip in late October to explore haunts across America. Their aim is to document their experiences and interview staff at these haunts.
One of the places they are eagerly searching for goes by the name Blue Skeleton; it is said to be beyond the ordinary limits, and essentially an unsanctioned temporary attraction that appears without prior announcement. As the group edges nearer to locating Blue Skeleton, they start to be pursued by individuals in eerie attire, eventually finding themselves in genuine peril.
One variation could be: “One film I always watch during Halloween is ‘The Houses October Built’. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend giving it a look. However, its sequel, titled ‘The Houses October Built 2’, isn’t on Shudder’s schedule at the moment.
As a passionate gamer, let me tell you about one of those movies that leaves people divided but undeniably intriguing – “It Follows”. In this chilling tale, Maika Monroe, or as I like to call her, Longlegs, plays the character Jay, a college student. Here’s where it gets interesting: Jay has an intimate moment with her boyfriend in his car, but things take a bizarre turn when he drugs and warns her about something he’s passed on – not your typical STD.
Instead, he tells her that a hidden entity has taken notice of her, and it will persistently pursue her until it claims her life. The sole method to free herself from this destiny is by transferring the curse onto someone else through intimate relations.
I’m solidly in the “I adore it” group when it comes to “It Follows“, and Monroe delivers an outstanding performance. For my personal taste, a horror movie’s success hinges heavily on whether or not you’re invested in the characters’ survival, and I found myself rooting for Jay to get through this ordeal safely.
October 4th release: “Beyond V/H/S” – Although I haven’t had a chance to watch this new addition to the acclaimed V/H/S series, I’ve enjoyed all the other six installments, so I feel comfortable recommending it here. Similar to its predecessors in the V/H/S series, this is an anthology film featuring various writers and directors.
Additionally, you might want to know that Mike Flanagan contributed a story called “Stowaway.” Flanagan is consistently reliable, and his frequent collaborator Kate Siegel was the one who directed it. Moreover, Justin Long, recognized for his roles in horror favorites like “Jeepers Creepers” and “Barbarian,” took on dual roles as both writer and director for another story titled “Fur Babies.
WNUF Halloween Special – This movie is a must-see for a spooky and fun Halloween watch! Despite being released in 2013, it has an authentic 1980s feel, which is part of its charm. The storyline presents us with a recording of a local news station’s Halloween special, giving off the vibe that we’re watching a VHS tape from back then.
Journalist Frank Stewart is reporting live from inside a house believed to be haunted, accompanied by his cameraman and three others. Previously, a man had killed his parents in this dwelling, asserting that evil spirits compelled him to act. Initially, Frank approaches the situation with a playful attitude, but as time passes, the events grow increasingly chilling.
The movie “WNUF Halloween Special” immerses itself completely in the 1980s vibe and ambiance, even incorporating local TV ads (occasionally speeding them up). It’s a truly enjoyable film that offers a charming throwback feel, yet it also manages to deliver some genuinely spooky scenes.
