As a die-hard DC fan who has seen more than a few superhero movies and shows, I can confidently say that Peacemaker has been one of the most surprising and enjoyable additions to the DC Extended Universe. John Cena’s portrayal of Christopher Smith is nothing short of brilliant, and James Gunn’s creative genius has once again breathed life into a lesser-known character.

Just before wrapping up the DC Extended Universe, it gave birth to its solitary TV show. Debuting as Peacemaker, this series starred John Cena, who had previously appeared in The Suicide Squad, a film directed by James Gunn. Gunn also took on the role of producer for the show, which premiered on Max (previously HBO Max) early in 2022. The series was swiftly renewed for a second season before the merger between Warner Bros. and Discovery.

With the launch of DC Studios, it was declared that the DCEU (DC Extended Universe) would conclude, giving way to a fresh start for the DC Universe. However, the series Peacemaker, being overseen by Gunn who is one of the new studio’s co-chairmen and CEOs alongside Peter Safran, will persist in this new continuity. Despite some season 1 events remaining canonical while others do not, fans can look forward to another season of the show, as it will align with the new DC Universe.

The teaser was shared by Gunn on his Instagram account as a tribute to the character, commemorating the anniversary of the comic book debut of the character.

The initial part of this article delves into the famous comic book where Christopher Smith initially appeared as the Peacemaker. On the following slide, you’ll find a glimpse of John Cena’s distinctive mask and costume for the first time.

In 1966, the character Peacemaker first appeared in issue No. 40 of Fightin’ 5, created by Joe Gill and Pat Boyette. Despite being a fixture in DC Universe for years after that, he didn’t gain widespread popularity until John Cena played him in The Suicide Squad. The offbeat portrayal of the character fit perfectly with the 2021 film, garnering positive feedback from audiences – although many fans disliked Peacemaker due to his arrogant and irritating personality. However, this was precisely the intention, making it a success for both Cena and Gunn.

scarcely anyone predicted he would get a standalone series, let alone develop feelings for the character. Yet, that’s precisely what transpired in Peacemaker, where Christopher Smith and his less-than-jovial group of assassins transformed into beloved figures among fans. To top it off, the show received overwhelmingly positive feedback, with many considering it one of the most exceptional titles within the DC Extended Universe.

This summer saw the start of production for Season 2, even as Gunn was helming the upcoming “Superman” project, marking the live-action debut of the DC Universe (with its animated series, “Creature Commandos,” premiering this December). In light of these commitments, I won’t be directing as many episodes in Season 2. However, rest assured that I will remain actively involved in the creative process and will still take the director’s chair for some of the episodes.

Gunn excels at taking lesser-known superheroes and villains and transforming them into iconic figures on the big screen. His work on Guardians of the Galaxy transformed the title team into blockbuster sensations, with each character becoming cherished elements in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’s managed to pull off this feat again with Peacemaker, which is why fans are excitedly waiting for season 2 when it debuts.
