The First DC/Marvel Crossover Movie Seems More Likely Than Ever

DC and Marvel Comics have a long history of bringing their heroes together, starting with the iconic Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man in the 1970s. This first meeting opened the door for other exciting team-ups between characters from both publishers. Over the years, fans have enjoyed seeing unusual pairings like Batman with the Incredible Hulk, and the X-Men with the Teen Titans. These crossovers always feel like special events for DC and Marvel readers.

As a longtime comic book and movie fan, I still remember the buzz when DC and Marvel finally teamed up for JLA/Avengers over twenty years ago! Seeing the Justice League and the Avengers together was a huge deal. Now, with exciting crossovers like the upcoming Batman/Deadpool team-up in 2025, and the current Superman/Spider-Man story unfolding, it’s got a lot of us wondering if we might see that same kind of collaboration happen on the big screen – could the DC and Marvel Cinematic Universes eventually merge, or at least share some characters? It’s a thrilling thought!

The Potential of the Multiverse

A movie uniting DC and Marvel characters feels increasingly likely. Recent special comic book issues, like DC/Marvel: Batman/Deadpool and DC’s Superman/Spider-Man, along with the upcoming Marvel/DC: Spider-Man/Superman (releasing April 22, 2026), are bringing these universes together. With creators such as Mark Waid and Dan Mora collaborating on these comics, they might be setting the stage for a larger crossover event on the big screen, combining the DC Universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This series of four standalone issues brings together a diverse group of heroes for the first time, with exciting pairings like Static and Ms. Marvel, Nightwing and Wolverine, and Daredevil and Green Arrow. With actors David Corenswet (Superman) and Tom Holland (Spider-Man) currently starring as two of the most popular superheroes, a potential crossover between their characters feels particularly relevant right now.

While recent comic book team-ups haven’t featured alternate universes, movies could use the multiverse to explain how different worlds connect. The DC show Peacemaker has already started exploring this idea, even in its early seasons. The show created a believable way for characters to travel between universes, using high-tech portals. James Gunn, the creator of Peacemaker, has even mentioned wanting to include a cameo from Deadpool by having him come through these interdimensional doorways. He shared this idea in an interview with Variety.

I had this idea for a scene where the door opens and there’s Deadpool. I discussed it with Ryan Reynolds, and he was on board! It would have taken a lot of effort to make it happen, but he really wanted to do it.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has already been delving into the idea of multiple universes as it prepares for major upcoming movies like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. While some fans might find it strange to see characters from DC and Marvel together, the concept of the multiverse actually makes these crossovers possible. It opens up opportunities for anything to happen, similar to DC’s well-known Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline, but on an even larger scale.

James Gunn Might Be The Key To Bridging Universes

James Gunn has a long history with both Marvel and DC, making him uniquely qualified to connect the two universes. He first gained recognition directing the Guardians of the Galaxy films for Marvel. Later, he moved to DC, where he directed The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. His success at DC led to his current role as a co-CEO of DC Studios, where he’s now leading the creation of a new DC cinematic universe.

In a 2023 interview with Empire, James Gunn discussed the potential for a movie that combines characters from both DC and Marvel universes, stating:

Now that I’m leading things, it seems more possible. It’s still a long way off, though. Right now, we need to focus on defining our current goals. We have talked about it, but those conversations have been casual and exploratory.

The Next Guaranteed Smash Hit

During the 1990s, when comic book sales were down, DC and Marvel teamed up for DC vs. Marvel. While some saw it as a simple marketing ploy, it successfully created excitement and boosted interest. Interestingly, Superman recently outsold every movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including releases like Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Many agree that the MCU is currently going through a weaker period, starting after Avengers: Endgame. Given this, now would be the perfect time for Kevin Feige to consider a large-scale crossover event featuring the Avengers.

We’re already seeing this with the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars movies, which will include the X-Men after Disney acquired Fox. After the massive success of Endgame, Marvel needed a new story with even bigger challenges, and exploring the multiverse provided a natural path forward. Now, to truly surpass its previous achievements, a crossover film featuring characters from both the Marvel and DC universes is one possible way for the MCU to raise the stakes.

Even if a team-up between Marvel and DC characters doesn’t happen right away, it would be a huge event. For years, fans hoped to see characters like Batman and Superman together, then a Justice League movie, and eventually an Avengers team. Now that both universes have explored the idea of multiple realities in their films and shows, a crossover feels more possible than ever.
