The final trailer for Alien: Romulus teases several callbacks to the original Alien

As a long-time fan of the Alien franchise, I am beyond excited for the release of the seventh film, Alien: Romulus. The trailers have given us just enough to wet our appetites without revealing too much, and I have high hopes that Fede Álvarez will be able to get this series back on track after the more polarizing entries.

The seventh installment in the “Alien” series is nearly upon us, and as the release date approaches, 20th Century Studios has unveiled the full-length trailer. While the first film from Ridley Scott in 1979 and James Cameron’s second installment in 1986 have received universal acclaim, the four subsequent movies have been met with mixed reactions. Will “Alien: Romulus,” directed by Fede Álvarez (“Evil Dead” 2013), revive the franchise?

Up to this point, the signs are positive for this series. A brilliant selection for director is Álvarez. His past horror projects, “Evil Dead” and “Don’t Breathe,” were critically acclaimed, and his preference for practical effects in filmmaking aligns perfectly with the “Alien” franchise.

Previously in an interview with Variety, Cailee Spaeny, the star of “Alien: Romulus,” shared that the production team behind the xenomorphs in Ridley Scott’s “Alien” was the same one hired for their project. This is truly thrilling news! In the same conversation, she also confirmed that “Alien: Romulus” fits chronologically between the first and second films in the “Alien” series.

In the last trailer, displayed above, fans are given a sneak peek of many beloved elements from the series to look forward to. Among these treats are the Xenomorphs and the reappearance of facehuggers. The upcoming movie “Alien: Romulus” tells the story of a team of explorers who enter the deserted Romulus space station in quest of remaining supplies for resale. However, they come to regret their decision when they uncover the reason behind the station’s abandonment.

The trailer is effectively scary with its ominous appearances, but I have concerns about revealing too much. At least one scene pays tribute to the iconic chestburster event, leaving me on the edge of my seat, anticipating the end. However, the clip persisted in playing longer than expected. I’m optimistic that there will be an abundance of frights unseen and that some clips may be deceitful, ensuring a thrilling experience with unexpected twists.

Regarding the 1979 movie, including a chilling preview excerpt of “You Are My Lucky Star,” the tune Ripley sings initially, adds a pleasant touch.

As an avid gamer and fan of the Alien franchise, I’m thrilled about the new additions to this iconic universe. Besides the seventh movie, there’s Noah Hawley’s upcoming FX series, Alien: Earth, which just finished filming and is predicted to debut in 2025.

The film “Alien: Romulus” with a rating of R for graphic violence and some strong language is set to hit theaters and IMAX screens starting August 16.
