The Fifty Shades Trilogy Is Leaving Netflix

The popular romantic film series starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan will soon be leaving Netflix. The movies will no longer be available to stream on the platform next month.

Starting January 1, 2026, the three Fifty Shades movies will no longer be available on the streaming service. This affects Fifty Shades of Grey (2015), Fifty Shades Darker (2017), and Fifty Shades Freed (2018). All three films are based on the books and star Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele and Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey.

Okay, so the story kicks off with Ana, a college student, landing an interview with the incredibly wealthy and, let’s be honest, gorgeous Mr. Grey. It’s pretty clear right away there’s a serious spark, but he’s also…intense. They start a relationship, and Ana quickly finds herself drawn into Grey’s complex world, discovering his secrets and, along the way, exploring her own desires. The later movies really dig into the challenges they face as a couple, strengthening their bond in the present while also revealing more about what made them who they are, hinting at some intriguing things from their pasts.

I loved the Fifty Shades films! Besides Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, so many other talented actors were in them – Eloise Mumford, Victor Rasuk, Luke Grimes, Marcia Gay Harden, Rita Ora, Max Martini, Andrew Airlie, Jennifer Ehle, and Dylan Neal. Sam Taylor-Johnson directed the first movie, and Kelly Marcel wrote it. Then, Niall Leonard took over the writing for the sequels, while they were directed by someone else.

The Fifty Shades movies are famously controversial, and while critics generally disliked them, they were hugely popular with audiences. The series has earned over $1.3 billion globally, making it one of the highest-grossing romantic film franchises ever.

Although the Fifty Shades movies were hugely popular with audiences, critics didn’t like them, pointing to weak dialogue, uneven pacing, and uninspired acting. Despite the negative reviews, the franchise became a notable part of pop culture, even inspiring a comedic spoof called Fifty Shades of Black.

Sons of Anarchy’s Charlie Hunnam Almost Starred in Fifty Shades

The Fifty Shades movies gave Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan a big boost in their careers, but the cast could have looked very different. In 2013, it was announced that Charlie Hunnam from Sons of Anarchy would star alongside Johnson, however, he had to leave the project due to conflicts with his filming schedule.

Several other well-known actors were considered for the leading roles. Robert Pattinson was an early favorite to play Christian Grey, and both Ian Somerhalder and Chace Crawford were also interested. For the role of Anastasia, Shailene Woodley and Alicia Vikander were among the actresses considered. Ryan Gosling declined the offer to play Christian, and Emilia Clarke, known for Game of Thrones, was offered the part of Anastasia but also turned it down.

The Fifty Shades of Grey films leave Netflix on Jan. 1, 2026.
