The feud between William Shatner and George Takei is much simpler than you realize

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the Star Trek universe, I must say that the ongoing feud between William Shatner and George Takei is as intriguing as any Klingon-Romulan conflict. It’s hard to believe that two men who brought to life characters as iconic as Captain Kirk and Hikaru Sulu can’t seem to get along.

Star Trek: The Original Series marked the beginning of the Star Trek franchise, which has endured for nearly six decades. Its impact on science fiction and popular culture is immeasurable, thanks to the show and its subsequent movies. The cast and their performances are deeply cherished and often regarded with a near-spiritual reverence by fans. However, this doesn’t mean that they always set high standards for each other behind the scenes.

Among the three cast members left from the show, there’s a noticeable tension between two of them – it’s quite strong, almost like they have disagreements that run deep. While ‘hate’ might be too intense a term for their feelings towards each other, their issues are significant and have been a part of their dynamic since their roles in the franchise. William Shatner played Captain James T. Kirk, while George Takei portrayed Hikaru Sulu, two key characters within the series.

Over time, Shatner and Takei have been integral not just to the Star Trek series, but also to broader franchise and sci-fi communities. Takei broke new ground by being the initial Star Trek actor to openly declare his homosexuality, while Shatner was the first to experience space travel among Star Trek actors (though there was a significant time gap between their journeys).

Despite appearances, these two seem to have an intense dislike for each other, much like two cats vying for the same sunlight streaming into the house. However, the root cause of their animosity might not require such elaborate investigation. In fact, it could be quite straightforward.

Egos.

The two individuals often clashed over trivial and unimportant matters, refusing to back down or apologize for their words. Over time, Shatner proved challenging to collaborate with, which led Takei to occasionally criticize him both publicly and privately.

Their longstanding disagreement has reached a stage where William Shatner, aged 93, and George Takei, aged 87, flat-out refuse to reconcile. This animosity seems to have been simmering since the late 1960s, as Shatner was not initially invited to Takei’s 2008 wedding to his husband, Brad Altman.

Regardless of the dispute they’re having, it doesn’t seem to be a major problem. Even minor disagreements can escalate significantly. Unfortunately, these two prominent figures often find themselves in conflict. We can only hope that they resolve their differences soon, before the situation becomes irreversible.
