The fascinating story behind The Girlfriend’s scene-stealing locations

The new Prime Video series, *The Girlfriend*, has quickly become popular since it launched last week. If you’re enjoying the show, you might be curious about where it’s filmed.

I’m totally hooked on this new thriller! It centers around a mom, Laura Sanderson, played by Robin Wright, who gets a really bad feeling about her son’s new girlfriend, Cherry. Her son, Daniel, brings Cherry home, and Laura just doesn’t trust her – she’s convinced Cherry is hiding something and isn’t being truthful about who she is. It’s so suspenseful!

The movie’s exciting plot is matched by its stunning locations in London and Spain. Here’s a guide to where the filming took place last year.

What to Read Next

Laura and Howard’s home

Laura and her husband Howard’s luxurious home in the show was filmed at a beautiful house in the wealthy St John’s Wood area of London.

The setting plays a key role in the series because it’s where Laura and Cherry first encounter each other and serves as a main hub for everything that happens.

The team was fortunate to discover the location just as renovations were finishing, which gave the show an ideal timeframe for filming.

Location manager Ben Mangham explained to *Country and Town House* that the homeowner was renovating her large house – with four floors, five bedrooms, and an indoor swimming pool – in the St John’s Wood area, and it would be vacant for the entire summer.

We were incredibly fortunate to find a location like this. Otherwise, the production team would have had to build the entire house set inside a studio, since so much of the show takes place there.

Walking around the area, you immediately notice the opulence,” Cooke explained to *Condé Nast Traveller*. “The homes are incredibly well-maintained and gorgeous – it almost feels like a movie set.”

Laura’s gallery

The scenes filmed at Laura’s art gallery in Soho were shot on location, and the production team was fortunate enough to film there between exhibitions, much like they were with Laura and Howard’s house. They simply managed to time it right.

They “hired the gallery and had our own exhibition”, according to Mangham.

The gallery in Soho was used as a filming location twice during the production, which was fantastic, as we had decorated the walls with beautiful artwork and even featured two different exhibitions within the story.

London penthouse

Throughout the show, Cherry and Daniel tour a luxurious London penthouse. The filming location was a flat overlooking Embankment, directly across from the Corinthia hotel.

Cooke remembered the location being fantastic, with breathtaking views of the Thames. They were able to spend the entire day there, from sunrise to sunset, and found it incredibly beautiful.

Wedding scenes

The wedding scenes from the first episode were filmed at Syon House, a historic villa in Hounslow. It’s a beautiful, nationally recognized building that has also appeared in popular shows like *Bridgerton* and *Killing Eve*.

Mangham described a lovely wedding reception taking place in a peaceful, flower-filled courtyard, but things quickly went awry when something happened with the wedding cake.

Spain

Filming for *The Girlfriend* happened both in London and Spain, specifically in Marbella. The production team shot scenes in the heart of Marbella’s old town.

The primary Spanish filming location for the show was Villa Tramores, a large rural estate that serves as Laura’s family home. The property features a main house with seven bedrooms, a separate three-bedroom guest house, two swimming pools, and a tennis court.

According to location manager Irene Manrique Martin, the property is located in Benahavís, considered one of the most prestigious villages in Marbella.

Notably, the villa has a connection to Princess Diana. Manrique Martin states that her family owned the property and she visited it frequently.

The house was filled with photos of her. It’s a stunning property – the family actually owns half a mountain, complete with a helipad! There’s also a lot of gorgeous natural landscape surrounding the house. The actors really felt comfortable there, as we filmed for almost a month.

Spain also featured unique locations like a Málaga cruise terminal that also functioned as an airport, and an olive oil factory in Ronda that was creatively repurposed as a vineyard.

Wales

In addition to filming in London and Spain, the production of *The Girlfriend* traveled to Wales to capture the rock climbing sequences. Location manager Mangham shared that they discovered a beautiful quarry near Chepstow, located on the border between Wales and England.

The Girlfriend is streaming now on Prime Video.
