Following the recent passing of Diane Keaton at age 79, plans are moving forward for a sequel to her popular 2005 holiday film, The Family Stone. Keaton, a highly respected actress with four Oscar nominations and one win for Annie Hall, is fondly remembered for her work. Writer and director Thomas Bezucha announced the sequel after 20 years, stating it will be a way to further celebrate her legacy.
In an interview with CNN, director Thomas Bezucha explained that he was developing a sequel when he heard about Diane Keaton’s passing. He felt a responsibility to the entire cast – which included stars like Rachel McAdams, Claire Danes, and Sarah Jessica Parker – but his primary concern was Keaton’s character, Sybil, the heart of the family in The Family Stone.
Losing Sybil has deeply affected me for months, especially while I was working on this project. It felt like a fresh pain on top of an already existing wound. I’ve been constantly thinking about the place where I used to be with her, still feeling her absence.
The film The Family Stone portrays a family navigating a difficult holiday season after learning that Sybil is seriously ill. Since the recent passing of actor Keaton, the movie has resonated with viewers in a new way and is likely to become a holiday tradition for many. Now, Keaton’s friend, Bezucha, hopes to create a sequel that revisits the family and allows audiences to grieve Keaton’s loss with the characters, mirroring the heartwarming and humorous way The Family Stone originally handled difficult emotions.
When Does ‘The Family Stone’ Sequel Come Out?

20th Century Fox
Over the past two decades, The Family Stone has become a beloved holiday tradition for many. The film blends relatable family dynamics, complicated relationships, and strong acting – particularly from Keaton – into a heartwarming story. While it performed well in theaters, earning $92.8 million on an $18 million budget, initial reviews were mixed, and it currently has a 53% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite this, the movie has gained a dedicated following, and fans are still invested in the Stone family’s story.
Getting a sequel to The Family Stone made is proving difficult, mainly because the cast hasn’t committed and Disney, which now owns the studio that originally made the film, hasn’t approved the project. Director Thomas Bezucha says he won’t move forward without the original cast, particularly Diane Keaton, who played Jan Stone. However, given the film’s enduring popularity around the holidays and Keaton’s significant role, there’s hope that the sequel could still happen relatively soon.
