Discussions about the release date for The Eternals 2 are generating a lot of buzz among fans eager to learn more about the future direction of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most debated team movie. The initial Eternals film presented an array of powerful extraterrestrial beings who had covertly influenced human history for 7,000 years, but despite its epic scope and star-studded cast, the original flick didn’t meet expectations in terms of critical acclaim and box office success.

As a die-hard fan, I must admit that the potential release of Eternals 2 seems to be quite far off, probably not before 2028 or even 2029 – and honestly, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it will actually come to fruition at all.

According to recent reports, Marvel Studios has decided to abandon the development of the sequel as part of their strategy to focus on producing a smaller number of top-tier productions instead.

According to Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman, reports from early 2024 indicated that the development of Eternals 2 had ceased. Similarly, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige expressed in a 2023 interview with Inverse that there were currently no plans for a sequel. This seems to be in line with Disney’s cautious approach towards production following some recent missteps within the MCU.

Reports from 2024 confirm that Eternals 2 is not among Marvel’s upcoming projects.

The choice was made following the initial film’s mediocre reviews and a relatively modest worldwide earnings of $402 million, despite boasting an impressive ensemble cast. At present, Marvel is prioritizing more robust franchises such as Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Avengers: Secret Wars, which pushes Eternals to the background.

In other words, while Marvel may not be continuing the storyline directly, Captain America: Brave New World implies that the Celestial known as Tiamut, previously stopped by the Eternals, remains a significant landmark in the Indian Ocean. This suggests that the occurrences of the Eternals movie are still having a considerable impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), even without a follow-up film.

If brought back for Eternals 2, the likely lineup might feature Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, and Kit Harington once more.

There’s currently no official summary available for Eternals 2, and given the current direction of Marvel’s plans, a follow-up movie may not happen.
