The Emmys prove Shōgun is one of the best shows you’re not watching
As a gamer who’s been around long enough to remember when “Shōgun” was just a name for an old strategy game, I must say that this modern take on the epic tale has truly blown me away! I’ve always had a soft spot for historical dramas, and the authenticity of this series is simply unparalleled. The cast, the dialogue, the story – it all comes together to create a captivating experience that transports you right into 17th-century Japan.
If you haven’t been tuning into Shōgun on FX (or FX on Hulu), it seems there might be something missing in your television schedule! The historical drama swept the awards at the recent 2024 Emmy Awards held on Sunday, Sept. 15.
The TV series “Shogun,” created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, is adapted from the 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell. It stars Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai, Tadanobu Asano, Takehiro Hira, among others. One appealing aspect of “Shogun” is its authenticity, as it boasts a predominantly Japanese cast and dialogue spoken in the Japanese language.
The story follows the journeys of two men: John Blackthorne, an English sailor who is known as a risk-taker, and Lord Toranaga, a member of the five Council of Five Elders ruling Japan.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been eagerly waiting for updates on the “Shōgun” series. Initially slated as a miniseries without a second season in sight, its overwhelming popularity, critical praise, and potential have led to an exciting announcement – there will indeed be a season two! If, like me, you were hesitant about diving into the first season because all episodes had aired, fret not! There are more adventures awaiting us. Unfortunately, we don’t have an exact release date for “Shōgun” season 2 just yet. The season 1 finale was unveiled this past summer on April 23, 2024. However, recent reports hint that filming might start soon, and there are tantalizing glimpses of what’s to come. Stay tuned for further updates!
The Japanese series titled “Shogun” became the first to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series and amassed 18 out of its 25 nominations. In other words, it holds the record for the most awards won by a single season in Emmy history.
In the category of Outstanding Drama Series, Shōgun faced off against heavyweights like The Crown, Fallout, The Gilded Age, The Morning Show, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Slow Horses, and 3 Body Problem –a challenging lineup indeed! But on this special night, Shōgun also walked away with several other accolades. Hiroyuki Sanada was recognized for his outstanding performance as Lead Actor, Anna Sawai received the award for Outstanding Lead Actress, and Frederick E. O. Toye was honored for his exceptional directing work in a Drama Series.
The historical drama “Shōgun” is a creation by FX, airing on both FX and Hulu. You can watch all episodes from the first season on the Hulu streaming service. Keep an eye out for updates about the second season when we have more information to share; in the meantime, stay tuned!
