The Electric State’s Joe Russo addresses changes from graphic novel
As a seasoned gamer and enthusiast of both graphic novels and movies, I must say that I am eagerly anticipating “The Electric State” hitting Netflix screens in 2025. The Russo brothers and Millie Bobby Brown teaming up for this project is a match made in entertainment heaven!
The movie titled “The Electric State” is expected to be among Netflix’s most significant releases in 2025, marking the first collaboration between the Russo brothers and Millie Bobby Brown.
Following the debut of the initial trailer, enthusiasts of Simon Stålenhag’s graphic novel, upon which the film is modeled, expressed some reservations about the Netflix adaptation of the novel.
As a seasoned co-director and producer who has worked extensively within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Joe Russo has become accustomed to managing fan expectations. To ensure he can effectively convey the narrative they intended, he has learned to “block out” external pressures.
In a unique interview with Digital Spy, he explained that fan expectations can be quite intricate. It’s not that they all desire the same thing; instead, each one craves something distinctly different.
Our aim is to create tales that we feel compelled to rewatch multiple times. It’s a necessity for us because we end up watching each piece countless times in the editing room. Therefore, we must ensure our enjoyment of it.
Russo explained: “Some characters appear exactly as they do in the comic book, while others were created anew, influenced by it. Instead of directly mimicking the book’s visuals, we selected characters from it and captured its overall mood.
In much the same way as the graphic novel “The Electric State,” the story unfolds in an alternate 90s, post a conflict between humans and robots. As tensions simmer during a fragile truce, a teenager without parents (portrayed by Millie Bobby Brown) embarks on a voyage to locate her missing younger brother.
In the process of turning Stålenhag’s graphic novel into a movie, the Russos collaborated closely with writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely to further develop the technology-themed ideas in their original work.
“There’s some really great elements to technology and some really horrifying elements to it. There’s some really great people working in tech right now and there’s some really terrifying people working in tech at the moment,” Russo explained.
It’s challenging to evaluate its effects as we might not comprehend its long-term influence on us for quite some time.
Occasionally, I remind my children, in a cheerful and thought-provoking manner, that we must exercise caution as we navigate technology, as it has the power to subtly change our minds and the longer we interact with it, the more profound these changes may become.
In our script development process, those central ideas were heavily influenced by Stålenhag’s work. Specifically, we found a shared perspective on technology that was evident in his art. His depictions are grim and dystopian, yet they retain an undercurrent of hope.
We delved into those ideas as if they were pools, and with each dive, we explored more about the impact of technology – its benefits and drawbacks.
The Electric State is released on Netflix on March 14, 2025.
