The Dune: Prophecy cast and crew are already planning future seasons

As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of science fiction and fantasy, I eagerly anticipate the premiere of HBO’s latest offering, Dune: Prophecy. The series, set 10,000 years before the events of the original movies, presents a fresh take on the beloved saga, with Emily Watson and Olivia Williams delivering captivating performances as the enigmatic Harkonnen sisters.

In the coming month, “Dune: Prophecy” – a TV series spin-off from the “Dune” films featuring Timothée Chalamet – will make its debut on HBO and Max. However, neither Chalamet nor his character Paul Atreides are associated with “Dune: Prophecy”. Instead, the story is set 10,000 years in the past, following a time when humanity has just won a war against intelligent machines and is attempting to rebuild. The Harkonnen sisters, Valya and Tula (portrayed by Emily Watson and Olivia Williams), are key figures within the fledgling Bene Gesserit sisterhood, aiming to guide humanity towards the right path.

Without giving anything away, I’ve had the privilege to preview some episodes, and let me tell you, it’s an engaging, intriguing, and thought-provoking series. As Emily Watson said during her interview with Collider, it’s “a truly tantalizing, flavorful, complex conundrum that’s sure to keep you hooked.

Travis Fimmel, who portrays Desmond Hart on the series, admired the show’s complexity as he put it: “Each character has their own imperfections, and they’re all extremely motivated, striving for what they believe they deserve. Many characters think they are right even when they may be wrong. I believe this makes it a deeply thought-provoking experience for viewers. The visuals are undeniably captivating and aesthetically pleasing, but the story is one that truly captured my heart.

There’s a good possibility that this series might gain popularity, leading one to wonder if it could extend past its initial season, comprising just six episodes. Could we be looking at a long-term exploration of the world of Dune, or is this all there is? Showrunner Alison Schapker hinted, “We do have a plan, and they’ve shown great interest in learning more about it.

We’ve got plans within plans in every way, measured in centuries. No, I mean, we do. It will come as no news that our show centers around the Bene Gesserit, but when they’re called the Sisterhood, so we’re in this sort of incipient organization, and then how do they become the Bene Gesserit? That is a multi-season journey to be on, and that is very much the story we wanna tell.

Jordan Goldberg, the executive producer, added his thoughts: “Their strategies are for the long term. They have a lot of story left to unfold.” Meanwhile, Olivia Williams shared the most reassuring news: “They also mentioned that they haven’t dismantled the set in Hungary, which is always a positive sign, indicating their plans to return.

From my perspective, it seems premature to discuss future installments of the show, but based on my initial viewing experience, this series has the potential to be a fulfilling long-term production. In agreement with Schapker’s views, I believe that each of the early episodes is not just entertaining but also substantial, and they each bring about significant changes in the storyline, making it unlikely that any episode is merely filler material. The world appears transformed after every single installment.

Absolutely, it’s the audience who will ultimately decide if “Dune: Prophecy” is worthy of a second season based on its quality. The upcoming premiere for “Dune: Prophecy” is set for Sunday, November 17, a week following the finale of “The Penguin”. Given that “The Penguin” has been receiving high praise, it’s hoped that HBO can maintain this success with “Dune: Prophecy”, thereby wrapping up the year on a strong note.
