The divisive Star Wars sequel trilogy lands new free UK streaming home

The entire Star Wars sequel trilogy—including The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker—is now available to stream on ITVX.

Since Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, the newer Star Wars films have been met with varying opinions. These movies continued the story decades after Return of the Jedi (1983), bringing back original stars Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill as Han Solo, Princess Leia, and Luke Skywalker.

The trilogy marked the beginning of a new chapter and introduced Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac as its main characters. The story focuses on Rey (Ridley), a resourceful scavenger with a connection to the Force, who becomes caught up in a large-scale conflict against Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) and his First Order.

What to Read Next

Rey joins forces with Finn, an ex-stormtrooper who defected from the First Order, and Poe Dameron, a skilled Resistance pilot. Together, they face a daunting mission to defeat the powerful Snoke and his dangerous follower, Kylo Ren—also known as Ben Solo, the son of Han and Leia.

Disney’s recent Star Wars films – The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker – were all very successful at the box office, each earning over $1 billion. While The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi were generally well-received by critics (scoring 93% and 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively), The Rise of Skywalker received a much lower score of 51%.

According to The Times, it’s disappointing that Rey’s story didn’t feel very emotionally impactful, and that the 42-year legacy of the Skywalker saga concluded in such an unsatisfying way.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I was really bummed to read something on MovieFreak.com that perfectly captured how I feel. They said it’s the first time it doesn’t feel like Star Wars anymore, like the magic is gone and it’s just become another franchise chasing profits. It’s a sad thought, but I totally get where they’re coming from.

According to Empire Magazine, the film is visually stunning and features excellent acting from Ryan Gosling and Daisy Ridley. However, the conclusion to the story isn’t particularly dramatic or underwhelming – it falls somewhere in the middle.

Many fans have expressed their disappointment online, particularly with storylines that don’t quite make sense and noticeable gaps in the plot of the newer installments.

The Star Wars sequel trilogy is now available to stream on ITVX.
