The Diplomat season 2 episode 1 recap: ‘When a Stranger Calls’
As a seasoned fan of diplomatic dramas, I must say that “The Diplomat” season 2 has set the stage for a gripping and suspenseful ride. The opening scene of episode 1, “When a Stranger Calls,” was a masterclass in storytelling and tension-building, with the clandestine conversations between Keri Russell’s Kate Wyler and Ali Ahn’s Eidra Park using a hospital whiteboard as their codebook being particularly captivating.
The Diplomat season 2 begins immediately after the bombing at the end of the season 1 finale.
The first scene of “When a Stranger Calls,” episode 1 of season 2 in “The Diplomat,” shows the aftermath of an explosion. Characters Ronnie Buckhurst (played by Jess Chanliau), Stuart Hayford (portrayed by Ato Essandoh), and Hal Wyler (acted by Rufus Sewell) were all hurt, though the exact nature of their injuries remains unknown at this point.
In Paris, Ambassador Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) and Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi) have just come to suspect that it may be the British, perhaps even Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear), who orchestrated the attack on a British vessel. Shortly afterward, they receive news of an explosion in London involving Hal and Stuart.
Right from the start of the season, it’s been clear that someone has perished in the explosion, and it could be either Ronnie, Hal, or Stuart. Not much time passes before we discover the identity of the unfortunate soul.
Kate and Dennison hasten back to investigate the unexpected turn of events, feeling anxious following their pleasant evening that had been disrupted. Upon their arrival, they discover Merritt Grove (Simon Chandler), the MP whom Hal had met, has tragically passed away. Ronnie, Stuart, and Hal are currently undergoing emergency medical treatment.
As surgeons strive to save a group of three Americans, Kate confides in Eidra Park (Ali Ahn), the CIA Chief in the UK, her hypothesis concerning the events that unfolded. She suggests that French intelligence believes Trowbridge and the British are planning to assassinate Lenkov, the culprit behind the ship attack. Moreover, she proposes that the Brits may have hired him to stir up an international scandal. The hospital is secured as a precaution in case the Americans face more danger. Eidra attempts to dissuade Kate from implicating the Prime Minister in the attack, but she senses there’s something amiss. She vows to investigate further, coinciding with Hal’s release from surgery.
Man, I’ve got to say, this scene is nothing short of incredible! The way it’s been set up, the acting, and the clever way Russell and Ahn’s characters are using a code on the whiteboard in the hospital room – it’s all absolutely mind-blowing. It’s just one of the numerous instances where the writing, performances, and overall execution in The Diplomat really shine!
Hal and Stuart live, but Ronnie dies
After undergoing surgery, I stirred awake in a hospital room, finding my beloved wife, Kate, standing by my side. The sight of her was a beacon of hope amidst the unfamiliar surroundings. However, the concern etched on her face told me that our dear friend Stuart’s fate remained unclear – we had to endure the long night for answers that would come with dawn.
Eventually, Eidra and Kate find out that Stuart lives, but Ronnie dies on the operating table.
Finally, Eidra wakes up from surgery. He thinks he got hit by a car, but she has to walk him through the events of the bombing and the fact that Ronnie is dead.
Kate informs Ronnie’s and Stuart’s loved ones about some distressing news. This news is heart-wrenching for her, disheartening for the team, and will undoubtedly leave a significant mark on the upcoming season.
Margaret Roylin is mysteriously missing
Following the bombing incident, Margaret Roylin (played by Celia Imrie), a key advisor to Trowbridge, has mysteriously vanished with no sign of her whereabouts. The British authorities are conducting a search, but so far, there’s been no trace of her. In an attempt to locate Roylin, Trowbridge assigns Dennison to the case. At this point, it remains unclear what information she possesses or why she is significant, but one thing is certain – she’s gone missing.
In simpler terms, Kate shares their suspicion that Trowbridge is responsible for the bombing, yet they’re unsure who informed him about Kate’s meetings with Grove or why his car was targeted. The main mystery is what information Grove had. Additionally, Kate confides in Hal that she contacted Margaret Roylin regarding the meeting. She made this call on the night of the bombing, discussing Grove with Roylin.
Trowbridge convenes a COBRA gathering, assembling key figures from the British administration and American officials in a protected site for a debriefing about recent events. Trowbridge suggests that Russia is responsible for the explosion on the aircraft carrier and the car bombing in London.
The meeting has disclosed that the bomb was manufactured by the British. Consequently, it’s now widely believed that the British may have been involved in the bombing incident.
Later on, Dennison discloses to Eidra and Kate that Roylin has gone missing, a fact that sets off warning signals in all three of them.
Eidra asks for Kate to step back from the allegations, but Kate pushes back.
Margaret Roylin calls Kate Wyler
Towards the finale of the show, Margaret Roylin phones the hospital and requests a conversation with the ambassador. To avoid being recognized, she employs the alias Anne Legendre Armstrong, a name that happens to be another woman who once served as Ambassador to the UK. This ruse is likely to pique Kate’s interest.
Then, the episode ends!
What’s her secret? What information does she possess? And, why does she require assistance from Kate? These are the major mysteries that will keep us intrigued as we dive into episode 2 of season 2 for The Diplomat on Netflix!
