The Devil Wears Prada musical is a fashionable, but not flawless, adaptation
As a seasoned theatre-goer and avid fan of the silver screen, I must confess that my expectations for “The Devil Wears Prada” musical were sky-high. Having watched its movie adaptation numerous times, I was eager to see how it would translate onto the stage.
Now, “The Devil Wears Prada” has made its grand entrance on London’s West End stage, joining a series of musical adaptations from non-musical films that also includes “Mean Girls,” “Back to the Future,” and “Mrs. Doubtfire.
Expectations ran high as they utilized Elton John’s music and the expansive Dominion stage, hoping to win over the critical eye of Miranda Priestly with this musical adaptation of ‘The Devil Wears Prada’. However, although she may appreciate the fashion and stage design, the musical version of ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ fails to truly captivate.
In adapting the story for the stage, there seem to be some debatable decisions. The first act packs in most of the film’s narrative, while the second act prolongs the Paris-based finale. This leads to a slow pace, particularly when certain songs serve no real purpose other than providing actions for characters like Andy’s boyfriend Nate.

As a fan, I find myself immersed once more in the enchanting world of 2005 (although there are stylish inclusions from 1994 to the present), keeping the Harry Potter narrative intact alongside Miranda’s subtle reference to Rupert Murdoch. The landscape of magazine publishing may have evolved since then, but I can’t help but feel that a bit of modernization could breathe new life into this captivating tale.
However, let’s not jump to conclusions about the musical, just as Miranda might be hasty with a new assistant. It has its fair share of strengths and weaknesses.
A stage adaptation of “The Devil Wears Prada” ought to be an eye-catching production, utilizing the expansive Dominion theatre stage for impactful scenes such as fashion shows in the aisles and grand ensemble performances. When the performance and music harmoniously blend, as they do in the exceptional number ‘Dress Your Way Up’, it creates a theatrical masterpiece of high fashion.

Among the numbers presented, it’s unfortunate that the main theme falls short of the grandeur of the performance setup, yet there are others that will have you eagerly anticipating the release of the soundtrack.
In a new interpretation, Nigel (played exceptionally by Matt Henry) receives an emotional ballad titled ‘Seen’, providing insights into a backstory not previously seen in the film. Meanwhile, Emily delivers the funniest number with the opening tune of the second act, ‘Bon Voyage’, which quickly becomes a favorite among audiences.
Amy Di Bartolomeo captivates everyone in the performance, even with the strong presence of Vanessa Williams and Georgie Buckland’s powerful singing as Andy. Di Bartolomeo skillfully embodies Emily Blunt’s interpretation of the long-suffering assistant while also infusing her unique touch into it.
Her talent is such that the play struggles noticeably during Emily’s absence in the second half, and it seems as if the production intentionally includes an unnecessary ‘Bon Voyage’ reprise merely to feature more of her.

I must admit, Vanessa Williams truly shines in her portrayal of Miranda Priestly. It’s a testament to her talent that even when she delivers lengthy monologues straight from the movie, it remains engaging and never feels like a mere repetition.
Most importantly, she gets a fittingly iconic entrance during early highlight ‘House of Miranda’.
The impressive cast and stylish production of “The Devil Wears Prada” musical manage to carry it past its shortcomings. Over time, minor adjustments and refinements might be beneficial, but for now, it provides a fun and fitting show for the West End stage.
