The Devil Wears Prada 2 raises eyebrows ‘by roasting Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez’ after billionaire couple funded Met Gala

People in the fashion industry were surprised and critical after a scene in the upcoming “Devil Wears Prada” sequel appeared to make fun of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez for sponsoring the Met Gala.

This year’s event is financially supported by a prominent couple who are also co-chairing it, along with Anna Wintour, Beyoncé, and Nicole Kidman.

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez might face an uncomfortable night at the upcoming Met Gala on May 4th. The event’s theme is rumored to be heavily inspired by ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2,’ and many believe the film will contain references that playfully mock their relationship.

Although official reviews of the new movie aren’t out yet, people who’ve seen early screenings have noticed a resemblance between a new character, Sanchez, and Emily Blunt’s character from ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ – the ambitious assistant who tries to impress Miranda Priestly.

So, in the follow-up, Emily’s moved on from Runway and is now with Christian Dior, which sounds amazing, right? But she’s still chasing that next level, and honestly, it leads her into a relationship with a pretty arrogant tech billionaire – Justin Theroux plays him, and he definitely brings the drama!

According to Variety, the character of Benji in Theroux’s work appears to be inspired by both Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk. The show uses flashbacks to depict him initially as overweight, then transforming as he gains wealth and begins to spend extravagantly on his significant other.

Benji’s first wife is portrayed as someone who donates her divorce settlement to charitable causes, seemingly inspired by what Bezos’s ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott, has done.

In the second season of Prada, Emily and Benji explore the possibility of buying Runway magazine. This storyline is thought to be a reference to reports that Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez have been interested in acquiring Condé Nast, the company that publishes Vogue.

Sanchez had previously expressed a desire to own part of Conde Nast. There was also some surprise when Anna Wintour chose Sanchez to be featured on the digital cover last year, wearing her wedding dress.

Aline Brosh McKenna, the screenwriter for Prada 2, reportedly wrote the script after talking with people who currently and previously worked at Condé Nast.

A representative for Emily Blunt denied reports that her character was inspired by Ana Sánchez Bezos, and Disney declined to comment on the claims.

The Daily Mail has reached out to Blunt, Disney, Sánchez, Bezos and Theroux for comment.

Sanchez and Bezos might have an uncomfortable evening at the Met Gala next month, as the actors from the upcoming Prada 2 movie are also scheduled to be there.

Honestly, I’m already seeing a lot of upset about this billionaire getting involved with the Met Gala. It’s a big fundraiser for the Costume Institute, and people aren’t happy about him being connected to it, apparently.

Protest posters now cover the boarded-up entrance of Daona Deli, a closed restaurant located right near the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, at 81st Street and Third Avenue.

As a longtime fan, I was immediately struck by the two massive posters. The first one was incredibly jarring – it depicted what looked like a plastic water bottle, but filled with urine, right on a red carpet with paparazzi cameras flashing. It really grabbed your attention, that’s for sure.

‘The Bezos Met Gala,’ the sign read. ‘Brought to you by worker exploitation.’

Beside it, a large, bright red poster demanded a boycott of the Bezos Met Gala, with the message written in bold white letters.

Below the main image, in smaller text, the poster stated bluntly: ‘Jeff Bezos, who is co-chairing the Met Gala, avoids paying taxes, supports ICE, and has backed Donald Trump. We need to hold him accountable.’

It is not immediately clear who put the posters up.

The posters seem to be in reference to previous allegations against Bezos’ company.

In 2023, a lawsuit alleged that three Amazon delivery drivers—one of whom was a veteran of the Iraq War—were compelled to resort to unsanitary conditions, like urinating in bottles and using dog waste bags as makeshift toilets, due to the pressure of meeting Amazon’s delivery demands.

The lawsuit claims Amazon forced employees to work in extremely poor conditions, including having to use delivery vans as restrooms.

Amazon representative Sam Stephenson stated to The Denver Post that the company supports its Delivery Service Partners in assisting their drivers.

As someone who closely follows Amazon’s delivery practices, I’m really glad to see they’re focusing on driver well-being. Specifically, they’re making sure drivers have enough time for breaks between deliveries, and they’ve even added a feature in the app showing nearby restrooms and gas stations. Best of all, they’re actually building restroom stops and longer break opportunities into the delivery routes themselves, which is a huge improvement.

The case has been stayed.

In November, Anna Wintour addressed concerns about her partner’s involvement with the Met Gala in an interview with CNN. She described him as someone who ‘really loves costumes and fashion.’

She said that she believes that Sanchez would be a ‘wonderful asset to the museum and the event.’

I’m just so touched by her amazing kindness, and we’re all absolutely delighted to have her join us tonight. It really means a lot to everyone involved.

This year’s dress code, ‘fashion is art,’ will help guests understand the gala’s broader theme of ‘costume art’ and give them a clearer idea of what to wear.

The event will be attended by many famous guests, including Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat, Misty Copeland, Lena Dunham, Angela Bassett, Sam Smith, and Chase Sui Wonders, all of whom are part of the host committee.

The New York City museum’s upcoming exhibition will showcase both historical and modern clothing from its Costume Institute. The exhibit will explore themes of the body through three main sections: representations of classical and nude forms, the changing bodies of aging and pregnancy, and the body as understood through anatomy.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is released in cinemas on May 1
