The Deliverance ending explained: What happens to Ebony?
As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for horror movies and a soft spot for family dramas, I must say that Netflix’s The Deliverance was a gripping rollercoaster ride that kept me on the edge of my seat until the very last scene.
In the series “The Deliverance” by Netflix, we encounter a blend of chilling haunted house scenarios and terrifying demonic possessions, skillfully intertwined with a deeply moving family saga. This compelling fusion culminates in a powerfully resonant finale.
Drawing inspiration from the real-life events surrounding Latoya Ammons, the film unfolds as a chilling tale about Ebony Jackson, portrayed by Andra Day, a lone parent who has recently relocated with her family and grandmother Berta, played by Glenn Close, into a new residence.
In my perspective, our household isn’t exempt from troubles – we’re financially strained, Ebony battles alcoholism, Berta fights cancer, Dad is deployed in Iraq – and now, we find ourselves grappling with an additional challenge as peculiar incidents seem to shadow us within our new home.
Under constant scrutiny from Child Protective Services, Ebony is struggling not just to retain custody of her kids Shante (Demi Singleton), Nate (Caleb McLaughlin from Stranger Things), and young Dre (Anthony B Jenkins), but also their very spirits, as a demon menaces to take control over them.
Let’s explore the conclusion of “The Deliverance” by addressing a significant query: Is the depicted supernatural presence genuine, or does it symbolize deep-seated emotional turmoil?
The Deliverance ending explained
Upon noticing several telltale symptoms suggesting a potentially haunted dwelling – such as birds colliding with the windows, an unpleasant odor, bothersome flies, and eerie sounds during the night – events at the Jacksons’ freshly moved-into residence begin to take a turn for the strange.
On a particular day, there was a mass emotional collapse among the students at school. Shante, in an embarrassing incident, scared off her choir mates due to an unexpected menstrual accident. On another note, Dre behaved unusually by throwing feces at his teacher. Indeed, these are true events.
At this stage, anyone who believed the demon’s presence was merely symbolic might begin to question their assumption.
Even though doctors attribute it to her mother’s abusive behavior, Ebony becomes increasingly convinced that some dark influence might be affecting her children.
In the comfort of a McDonald’s restaurant, our protagonist encounters Bernice, a divine messenger with a crucial revelation: there seems to be a malevolent spirit residing in their home. Memories flood back of a past family who met a tragic and grisly end within the same dwelling 20 years prior.
Bernice proposes to carry out a spiritual liberation – a term distinct from an exorcism, as it does not necessitate the involvement of a mediator.
Upon Ebony’s return home from the gathering, a cross mounted on the wall is ablaze, and her mother, who had been prepared to battle the supernatural threats they faced, lies lifeless.
Following the event, Ebony finds herself apart from her kids, with most of them being placed in a temporary care facility. However, there’s an exception – Dre, who is rushed to a hospital due to his peculiar behavior: he was growling, hissing, speaking an unfamiliar language, and scaling walls reminiscent of Spider-Man.
As Cynthia, the social worker responsible for Ebony’s situation, begins to ponder, she suspects that perhaps there might be more to her case than mere poor parenting.
In dire straits, Ebony turns to apostle Bernice in search of help. The two then decide to secretly take Dre out of the hospital and bring him home for a ritual deliverance. But unfortunately, the demon’s power proves overwhelming, causing Bernice to lose her life. This leaves Ebony to confront the demon on her own.
Eventually, Ebony navigates to the previously unexplored basement, a place shrouded in mystery since the haunting began. In the depths of this basement, which seems to embody her subconscious and repressed traumas, Ebony confronts the demon, who has assumed the shape of her own self, thus presenting a battle against her own reflection. This symbolism is precisely what you were seeking!
Following a tumultuous upbringing that drove her away from religion, Ebony rediscovers her spirituality as a means to protect her kids. The strength of Christ courses within her, empowering her to combat adversity.
In the meantime, Shante and Nate can be found at the care home, reenacting the pose and injuries similar to those of Jesus on the cross. This is because they have successfully managed to free themselves from the grip of the demons.
As the demon is sucked back into Hell, Dre is returned safe and sound.
The battle against wickedness may have temporarily ended, but it doesn’t imply that Ebony will be reunited with her children right away. With Cynthia now having seen Dre’s possession, she is prepared to assist in moving things along more quickly, provided that Ebony can sort out her life first.
Six months down the line, the juvenile court approved a petition from the Department of Children’s Services, and at last, Ebony was reunited with her kids.
As I navigate through the city streets, Philadelphia bound in our family vehicle, I can feel the excitement buzzing from my kids, sensing they can sense something new is unfolding. Ebony shares that she’s been connecting with their dad, and the joy on their faces is as bright as the city lights reflecting off our car windows. She tells them we’re going to make an effort to sort things out between us and Dad, a news that leaves them beaming with hope.
The film, titled The Deliverance, concludes by showing a genuine image of La Toya Ammons, who served as the narrative’s inspiration.
In addition, the film provides some new information about the spooky mansion: For those curious, it stood empty until it was demolished in 2016. To this very day, people continue to report mysterious happenings near the site.
The Deliverance is now available to watch on Netflix.
