The Deliverance director responds to viral Glenn Close moment
As a longtime admirer of Lee Daniels’ bold and daring storytelling, I must say that his fearless approach to filmmaking never ceases to amaze me. In The Deliverance, he once again demonstrates his unapologetic commitment to pushing boundaries and challenging audiences, as evidenced by the infamous line uttered by none other than the esteemed Glenn Close: “I can smell your nappy pussy.”
The Deliverance spoilers follow.
Director Lee Daniels, of “The Deliverance,” couldn’t help but include a memorable scene starring Glenn Close in the film’s final version, after it went viral.
On August 30, a supernatural horror movie premiered on Netflix, titled “Ebony Jackson” starring Andra Day. In this film, Ebony, a single mother, is struggling to raise her three kids – portrayed by Caleb McLaughlin, Demi Singleton, and Anthony B Jenkins – all on her own.
Desiring to escape her internal struggles by relocating, the family finds themselves face-to-face with actual horrors in their newly adopted neighborhood. The authorities were informed about the mysterious occurrences taking place within their home, as Child Protective Services became involved.
In this role, renowned actress Glenn Close portrays Alberta, Ebony’s mother, who comes to live with the family as she battles cancer. Though Close has made a name for herself in prestigious roles, this new character presents a unique departure from her previous parts, even earning her an eighth Academy Award nomination.
In a particular scene, an ailing Alberta, lying in bed, is overtaken by a demonic force, addressing her daughter: “I can detect the scent of your soiled intimacy.” This line has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with one user commenting on X’s Twitter: “Lee Daniels, you will be held accountable for making Glenn Close say this #TheExorcism”
Previously known for directing films like “Precious”, “The Paperboy”, and “The Butler”, Daniels commented on a post by saying, “Had to do it” followed by a laughing emoji. He later explained that he had to insist on keeping the line in the final version of the scene.
He replied to a fan saying, “I understand the preference of my viewers. Some suggested removing a particular scene from the movie, but I felt it was necessary to keep it.” This implies that he is aware of the audience’s preferences yet decided against removing the suggested scene because he thought it was important for the film.
The Deliverance is streaming on Netflix now.
