Lobo doesn’t appear in the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book. However, there’s a logical reason he could be included in the Supergirl movie. In the comics, Supergirl is attacked by a group of space pirates who are trying to prevent her from discovering something important. She easily defeats them, but this event could be adapted for the film.

The upcoming Supergirl movie needs to present a real challenge for the hero, and introducing Lobo as a bounty hunter could do just that. Lobo is powerful enough to even trouble Superman in the comics, so he’d be a formidable opponent for Supergirl. He’s also a mercenary who’s motivated by payment, not by who’s asking.

There’s an even more significant reason Lobo was included in the story. Tom King explained in an interview with WordBalloon that he originally envisioned Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as a tale of Lobo assisting Supergirl in her quest for revenge. But his editors suggested a different approach: having Supergirl help a young child instead.

This addition really elevated the comic. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow reimagines the classic Western True Grit, and Tom King originally envisioned Lobo playing the role of Rooster Cogburn. Instead, he cast Supergirl as Rooster and a young Ruthye in the Mattie Ross role. Lobo’s cameo is a delightful surprise for fans familiar with the source material.

Lobo Working As A Bounty Hunter In Supergirl Would Make Sense For Other Reasons Too

Jason Momoa revealed that playing Lobo has always been his dream role. He shared that he’s a longtime fan of the comic book character and was initially anxious about taking it on. “It just made sense to play this character—it’s a really big opportunity,” Momoa explained in an interview with Ebaster.

He acknowledged his role in Supergirl is relatively small, but expressed hope to appear in future films. Interestingly, the original comic book concept by Tom King involved Lobo assisting Supergirl, which could potentially be incorporated into the movie.

Lobo might understand the situation by figuring out why Supergirl is fighting, or by noticing the little girl, Ruthye. If he does, he could end up helping Supergirl and then zooming off on his space bike for more adventures.

There’s a strong possibility Lobo will return to the DC Universe. With the storyline heading towards the Salvation prison planet, it provides a natural setting for his reappearance. His brief appearance in Supergirl probably won’t be his last, particularly given the popularity of both Jason Momoa and the character of Lobo.
