The Day of the Jackal and the 5 best Peacock shows of 2024
Well now, as someone who’s been around the block a time or two, I must say I found myself quite captivated by the lineup of shows Peacock had to offer this year. From the light-hearted fun of “Based on a True Story” to the chilling suspense of “Hysteria!” and “Teacup”, there was something for every taste.
2024 has been an exceptional year for fresh series gracing Peacock screens, and the cherry on top was savoring “The Day of the Jackal“. Though there’s one more enticing show left this year featuring Stephanie Hsu in “Laid” (premiering December 19), I feel we’ve already witnessed enough captivating content to confidently declare my favorite Peacock shows from 2024!
We picked the six best Peacock shows of the year and shared the list. If you need something to watch on Peacock and you missed one of these good shows, this is the list for you.
Kick off our list with the standout Peacock production of the year, “The Day of the Jackal,” featuring Eddie Redmayne in the leading role.
The Day of the Jackal
Among all the shows listed here, undeniably, “The Day of the Jackal” is the most well-liked one. Despite the Eddie Redmayne series having its premiere in November, it appears that this show is shaping up to be the biggest release on Peacock in 2024.
The television show is adapted from both the book and movie titled similarly by Frederick Forsyth. In this series, Redmayne portrays the Jackal character, who is known as the world’s top assassin. In the first episode, the Jackal assassinates a high-ranking German official at an impressive distance. As a result, MI6 agent Bianca (played by Lashana Lynch) becomes determined to track down the Jackal and bring him to justice. Over the course of 10 episodes, Bianca pursues the Jackal relentlessly, but he always seems to stay one step ahead, resulting in numerous deaths along the way.
Fans can’t stop discussing the thrilling finale of “The Day of the Jackal” season 1, and here’s exciting news: The series has been revived for a second season, which will stream on Peacock and Sky!
The Traitors
As a dedicated gamer (or enthusiast, or fan), I’d say: This year, I was thrilled to dive back into the world of “The Traitors” when its new season dropped on Peacock way back in January. Led by the charismatic Alan Cumming, “The Traitors” is one of the most compelling competition reality TV shows currently out there. Ever since it first premiered on Peacock back in January 2023, I’ve been hooked!
In “The Traitors,” several well-known stars from the realm of reality TV join forces to play an intense game that requires them to hide their true identities. If you haven’t watched it yet, I can’t recommend it enough, especially if you enjoy shows like “Survivor,” “The Challenge,” “Big Brother,” and other programs with elements of deception.
On January 9, 2025, “The Traitors” comes back with a new season on Peacock. Don’t miss out on this fantastic show as it continues!
Based on a True Story
Next up, we’re talking about BOATS, and no, not those little things that float.
Without a doubt, “Based on a True Story” stands out as the funniest Peacock comedy series thus far. While it’s possible that Poker Face could surpass it in the future given its promising start, for the time being, “Based on a True Story” takes the lead!
Titled “A True Life Drama,” this series centers around the lives of Ava and Nathan, a pair of spouses who embark on an intriguing venture – a podcast about serial killers, featuring one in real life. However, their endeavor veers off course from their initial expectations.
Cuoco is so good in this series. If you’re a fan of hers and you’re not watching, now is the time! And, the rest of the shows on the list are rather heavy, so Based on a True Story is definitely the light-hearted, fun Peacock show to watch right now.
On November 21, 2024, the second season of the series “Based on a True Story” was released on Peacock. We can hardly wait for season 3 to arrive!
Bel-Air
In August 2024, the beloved show “Bel-Air” commenced its third season, as announced earlier. Interestingly, Peacock has confirmed that the original series will continue for a fourth season, marking the final chapter in the successful run of this popular series.
In case you haven’t heard, this show is a more intense, up-to-date retelling of Will Smith’s life journey. Jabari Banks portrays Smith in the highly successful series which made its debut in February 2022. The series has garnered an impressive 85% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but many viewers agree that season 3 takes the cake as the best season yet. Notably, it boasts a perfect 100% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and it truly lives up to the hype!
If you’d like to catch up on “Bel-Air” before its final season starts some time next year, there’s plenty of time for you to do so and get fully up to speed.
Hysteria!
The last two selections on the list are horror-themed series, however, one is a horror-comedy titled “Hysteria!“, which debuted on Peacock this autumn perfectly timed for Halloween. I thoroughly enjoyed this show! It’s not often we come across series like this one, and I truly hope everyone gets the opportunity to watch it. With so many new shows popping up on various streaming platforms, it can be challenging to keep track of them all.
The show follows a small town during the peak of the Satanic Panic in the 1980s. A series of murders and disappearances have put the town under scrutiny, with the local teenage band members becoming the main suspects of these crimes. However, did they actually commit the crimes?
In this series, we have Bruce Campbell joined by Julie Bowen, Nikki Hahn, Emjay Anthony, Chiara Aurelia, Kezii Curtis, and Anna Camp as fellow stars.
Teacup
Among the outstanding Peacock series of the year, the Teacup stands out as our top choice. Similar to Hysteria!, this show falls under the horror genre, but unlike some comedies, it’s decidedly not meant to be humorous, at least not intentionally so. The series is adapted from the book, Stinger, penned by Robert R. McCammon.
The series called “Teacup” made its debut on Peacock on October 10th, making it one more option for viewers this Halloween! At present, we’re unsure if a second season of “Teacup” will be produced, but the future remains uncertain.
It’s clear that this show ranks among the top for the year on our streaming platform. The narrative follows a group as they delve into the enigma surrounding a series of bizarre, inexplicable events that start befalling them.
Keep an eye out for further updates on the six engaging Peacock series we have! We’ll share additional details once we get them.
