The Darkness’ Justin Hawkins reveals the amount the band make every year from their one Christmas song

Everyone knew The Darkness didn’t anticipate their song ‘Christmas Time’ becoming so popular.

Despite the song’s continued popularity after 22 years, lead singer Justin Hawkins, age 50, says it doesn’t actually generate as much revenue as people might assume.

The song initially earned £1 million when it was released in 2003, during The Darkness’s most popular period.

Even now, it reappears on Christmas playlists each December, though it doesn’t earn nearly as much money as it once did.

Speaking to The Sun, Justin explained: ‘You don’t make as much from that as you might imagine.

‘If we’d released it in the 1980s, we could have made an awful lot of money.

Honestly, it’s amazing how often their music still pops up on the charts – especially with all the streaming now! But don’t let that fool you, it’s not like we’re seeing any real money from it. It’s frustrating, you know? They deserve so much more!

He went on to share that Christmas royalties depend on publishing deals and sync fees.

Back in 2003, Christmas Time sold 385,000 copies in the UK during the festive season alone.

The band The Darkness recently re-entered the music charts thanks to a boost in popularity after Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce were seen dancing to their hit song, “I Believe In A Thing Called Love.”

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce sparked a huge reaction online after showing affection for each other at the US Open women’s final in New York.

Surprisingly, Taylor was seen happily singing along to the band’s popular song from 2003.

Thanks to the singer’s popularity, fans rushed to hear the song, sending the band back onto the US singles chart at number 33 – more than 20 years after it was first released.

The Darkness singer Justin Hawkins discovered videos of himself circulating online and shared about it on TikTok.

He expressed his gratitude to the couple, saying they made him feel like an amazing father, and shared how happy his daughter was.

Justin shared that it was a special and touching moment for him and his daughter, who was excited to share the news with her classmates. He expressed his gratitude to both Taylor and Travis.

At the start of the video, Justin shared that he’d seen Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour show in Zurich a few weeks before. He explained how a handwritten note from Taylor, saying she enjoyed one of his songs, had really excited his daughter.

He recounted going to see Taylor Swift perform in Zurich a few weeks ago, and was incredibly impressed by the hospitality. They were driven into the stadium on a golf buggy, parked near the trucks, and seated in a fantastic VIP section. He was thrilled to be sitting between Chris Rock and Roger Federer, feeling like a proud father.

It got even better when I found a wonderful letter from Taylor Swift waiting for me in the VIP area. She wrote about how much she enjoys my song, ‘I Believe In A Thing Called Love’.

‘I was just dad of the year, maybe dad of the century, because all of that was a big surprise.’

Justin then mentioned the recent buzz from the US Open, saying, ‘Everyone’s been sending me videos of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce dancing to ‘I Believe In A Thing Called Love’ during the tournament – they seemed to be really enjoying it!’

It was a truly special moment for both my daughter and me, and she’s excited to share the news with her friends at school.

Thanks to Taylor, Travis, and everyone who loves tennis! It’s a wonderful way to begin the day. Well done, everyone!
