The dark side of Chicken Shop Date: How Amelia Dimoldenberg’s viral show has featured criminals charged with assault, drug busts and murder

Chicken Shop Date is a popular online show known for hosting big celebrities like Cher, Jennifer Lawrence, and Ed Sheeran.

Despite being on YouTube for 11 years, Amelia Dimoldenberg’s show has also featured guests who have surprisingly serious criminal histories.

Rapper Ghetts, who also appears on Netflix, admitted in court this week that he caused the death of a student by hitting them with his car and then leaving the scene. The impact threw the victim an estimated 70 feet.

Ghetts, whose real name is Justin Clarke-Samuel, was the first celebrity guest on Amelia’s new online show. The show features Amelia, age 31, taking stars on dates to various chicken shops around London.

The interview from 2014 has been viewed 1.4 million times. The two friends also marked the tenth anniversary of their popular “Chicken Shop Date” last year by creating a follow-up episode.

During what was essentially a first date on the show, Amelia thanked Ghetts, age 41, for giving her the motivation to continue with the series.

She admitted that having me as her first guest—someone she found trustworthy, skilled, and naturally humorous—gave her the confidence to continue making the show. She wasn’t sure she would have kept going without that positive start.

Ghetts, a British rapper and actor known for his role in the Netflix series Supacell, recently admitted to causing a death while driving dangerously.

On the night of October 18th in Ilford, east London, a musician driving a black BMW M5 struck Yubin Tamang at 11:33 PM and didn’t stop at the scene.

Tamang, a 20-year-old from Nepal who enjoyed studying in the UK and listening to hip hop, was thrown between 60 and 70 feet into the air after being struck by Ghetts. Sadly, he passed away in the hospital two days later.

In court on Monday, Ghetts pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. He also admitted to driving dangerously on Tavistock Place and in the areas of Islington, Camden, and Hackney before the fatal incident.

The defendant hasn’t formally responded to charges of causing death by careless driving while over the legal alcohol limit, nor to a separate charge of dangerous driving. He has admitted to drinking Hennessy cognac and Coke around 9:30 PM.

Ghetts has been told that it is ‘inevitable’ that he will be jailed for causing Mr Tamang’s death.

He remains remanded in custody ahead of sentencing likely to take place on February 12.

Ghetts’ recent legal trouble continues a pattern among cast members of Chicken Shop Date, with several having faced legal issues.

In 2016, Amelia caused a stir when she interviewed members of the drill group 67 – Monkey (Lloyd Acheampong), Dimzy (Steven Mubama), and LD (Cassiel Wuta-Ofe).

The 67, a group once supported by Tim Westwood and even nominated for a MOBO Award, are now connected to serious violent crimes like shootings and stabbings, as well as other illegal activities including blackmail, drug dealing, and extortion across several counties near London.

Okay, so everyone’s talking about Monkey and Dimzy, and thankfully they seem to stay out of trouble. But LD, or Scribz as I call him, man, it was awful seeing his career basically put on hold. He got caught up with some drug stuff and ended up in jail for years. It really hurt to see such a talented artist sidelined like that, but he’s back now and I’m so hyped for him!

Cassiel Wuta-Ofei, known as LD, and Malki Martin, who uses the name ASAP, have been sentenced to a combined nine years in prison for running a drug operation that supplied heroin and crack cocaine to areas around London.

But his career was disrupted for several years after being jailed for drugs offences.

In March 2018, two members of the rap group 67 were pulled over while driving a Mercedes A Class in Basingstoke, Hampshire.

The court learned the two individuals were previously convicted in 2013 for possessing crack cocaine and heroin with the intention of selling it.

Later, LD claimed he was shocked by the guilty verdict, recalling being filmed in a Rolls Royce while being driven away from prison.

He also denied that drill rappers or The 67 were connected to violence and organised crime.

LD, known for wearing a silver mask after authorities attempted to remove him from YouTube, stated that he and his group came from humble beginnings and were exploring opportunities to earn money through music.

LD told Amelia that simply being a member of the ’67’ often made women want to go out with him.

During a 2017 episode of the show Chicken Shop Date, Amelia playfully asked rapper Suspect if his stage name meant people thought he was a criminal.

The next year, Tariq Monteiro – also known as the suspect – became a person of interest in a murder investigation after Alex Smith, a young football player from Southampton, was stabbed and killed in north London.

A 25-year-old suspect and Siyad Mohamud, 27, chased a teenager down Great Portland Street and then fatally stabbed him with a roughly foot-long machete in Munster Square, near Camden.

Alex found himself caught in a violent conflict between two North London gangs – ‘The Cumbo Gang’ and ‘The Agar Grove Gang’ – as revealed in court.

It was absolutely horrifying to learn what happened after he was killed. The people responsible didn’t just stop there – they actually made a video celebrating his death online! Then, unbelievably, they fled to Kenya, managing to escape the Met Police investigation. It’s just… shocking and incredibly upsetting.

After a search, the two suspects were arrested in Nairobi, the capital city, and then returned to the UK.

I’ve been following this case closely, and it’s come out that the accused actually moved to Kenya, got married, and had a son. Apparently, his wife and child are still living there now. It’s a really complicated situation, and I feel for his family.

After a five-week trial, the Old Bailey jury found both the suspect and Mohamud, also known as Swavey, guilty of murder.

The first suspect received a life sentence with a minimum of 24 years in prison, and Mohamud was sentenced to life, with a minimum of 23 years.

In 2018, Amelia went on a playful date with rapper Headie One, following requests from her fans who wanted to see them together on the show.

Shortly before Headie One was scheduled to perform at Glastonbury, he was arrested in Tottenham for having a lock knife and hindering the police during a search.

He received a six-month prison sentence for having a lock knife, but was released after serving four months in April 2020.

Headie One, whose real name is Irving Adjei, developed his musical talent while in prison, writing the lyrics and rhymes for his album ‘Edna’ – which went on to become the UK’s number one album.

He first went to prison at 17. In 2014, he was caught with almost £30,000 worth of cocaine and heroin while involved in drug dealing at Aberdeen station, which led to a 30-month prison sentence.

He admitted his latest time in prison made him realize that if he didn’t change his ways, he’d be stuck in this cycle forever.

Headie One, a musician who grew up on the Broadwater Farm estate in North London, recently told The Times he believes the prison system is intended to damage people’s mental health.

He explained that maintaining a positive attitude takes incredible strength. He realized he needed to break free from a destructive cycle, or it would consume him permanently.

In 2020, Amelia invited Yung Filly to appear on Chicken Shop Date alongside fellow rapper Chunkz.

Last year, rapper Yung Filly, whose real name is Andrés Felipe Valencia Barrientos, was accused of rape and assault following an incident in his hotel room in Perth. The alleged incident occurred on September 29th after he performed at Bar1 Nightclub in Hillarys.

Earlier this year, he pleaded not guilty to three counts of assault causing injury, one count of strangulation, and four counts of sexual assault. He hasn’t yet entered pleas for two additional sexual assault charges.

The rapper is scheduled to appear in Perth District Court on February 5th, and their trial is set to begin at the same court on July 20th.

The YouTuber, who was already out on bail, was accused of reckless driving on November 17th. According to Australian news reports, they were driving 158km/h (98mph) on a Perth highway with a 100km/h (62mph) speed limit.

Earlier this year, Yung Filly was accused of another rape. This new accusation involves a different tourist and allegedly occurred in a Magaluf hotel after he performed at an event there last summer.

A woman, thought to be in her twenties, told British police that the rapper sexually assaulted her. They then shared this information with Spanish authorities.

A few weeks after returning home to Britain from vacation, the woman reported Barrientos to the UK police, which led to an investigation by a Spanish court.

Digga D has gained a reputation as London’s most controversial rapper due to his ongoing conflicts with other drill artists.

Oh my gosh, I still can’t believe it! Rhys Herbert, aka Fred again.., totally captivated Amelia on Chicken Shop Date back in 2020. He’s just… magnetic, even on a silly little date show! I remember watching it and just knowing he was special. Seriously, that episode is iconic.

Known as Digga by his followers, the rapper has a criminal record involving gang activity and drugs. Before his recent imprisonment earlier this year, friends stated he had made as much as £3 million through his music. He revealed in court last year that he first started using drugs at the age of 12.

He’s gained the online nickname ‘London’s most hated rapper’ because he uses rap music and videos to provoke opponents and promote violence, resulting in a large number of personal conflicts.

Digga, a musician from west London, faced an unusual police order that restricted his music due to its connection to violent incidents.

He narrowly avoided blindness after being stabbed in the eye by another inmate during a prior prison sentence for a machete attack. We’ve also learned that someone once attempted to murder him by shooting at his car.

Okay, so Digga D said this in an interview with The Guardian, and it totally gets me. He was talking about being in jail, and he explained it like, when I was younger, I just didn’t listen to anyone, you know? If I was a rebellious teen who was into getting into trouble, I definitely wouldn’t want to hear advice from someone trying to change their ways. It’s like, he gets it! He really gets how you feel when you’re young and just…living life, you know?

I usually don’t tell people what not to do. Instead, if they’re determined to take a certain path, I explain that every choice has consequences. I encourage them to consider the potential outcomes, especially in heated situations. If someone tries to provoke a fight, it’s important to think things through first. Basically, every action leads to a reaction.

Digga D was sentenced to nearly four years in prison in January for his involvement in a drug operation. He helped bring 45 kilograms of cannabis into the country from the US and was convicted for selling it.

Digga had a criminal record, with six prior convictions for a total of thirteen offenses. These included possessing a weapon and participating in violent disorder, for which he received a 30-month youth detention sentence in March 2020.

A year after Digga D was a guest on Chicken Shop Date, Fredo – someone he has a long-standing rivalry with – appeared on the show.

In a 2023 interview, he acknowledged possessing several negative personality traits, but he declined to discuss them further when Amelia asked for details.

Fredo is associated with The Harrow Road Boys, a gang whose members have been arrested for allegedly planning to shoot Digga D.

The Harrow Road Boys and the CGM gang were locked in a violent feud, escalating into a postcode war that spread beyond the Mozart Estate. This conflict would ultimately lead them to target and attempt to shoot rival rapper Digga.

The conflict between the two gangs started when a member of the HRB – a group known for dealing drugs and using children to grow their network in west London – was shot while crossing into the other gang’s area.

After his brother, Daneche, was shot in west Kilburn, Jayvon Tison, known as Lil Dotz, reportedly organized a search for the shooter and circulated a list of people connected to the rival gang to target.

I still can’t believe it. Seven of them, including Jayvon, locked up! A hundred and sixteen years combined! They said it was for planning to have guns, bringing phones into prisons, and dealing drugs… honestly, it feels like a lifetime. I’ve been following this case for ages, and seeing them get sentenced like that… it’s just unreal. I keep replaying it all in my head, trying to understand how it got to this point. It’s devastating, truly.

You know, during the trial, another name came up – Fredo, or Marvin William Bailey as he’s officially known. He was listed as someone involved in the situation, but unfortunately, he didn’t show up for court. We’ve heard he’s currently living overseas, so getting him involved has been tricky.

During sentencing on August 18th, Judge Marcus Tregilgas–Davey stated the group had been engaged in a prolonged and lethal feud with CGM, marked by numerous shootings and retaliatory acts of violence.

The conflict was made worse by bad blood between leading members of the HRB and CGM gangs, Fredo and Digga D.

In 2021, Amelia invited drill star Tion Wayne onto the show for a ‘date’.

I first discovered Tion – Dennis Junior Odunwo is his real name – way back in 2010. He’s originally from Edmonton, which is in North London, and he really started getting noticed when he began sharing his music on YouTube. I’ve been a fan ever since!

In March 2017, he was involved in a brawl after performing at a nightclub in Bristol.

From what I understand, this wasn’t a gang issue, but a situation that started with some folks who weren’t allowed inside an event. Instead of leaving, they apparently stuck around outside, and things escalated from there. It’s a reminder that sometimes, simply not leaving a situation when you’ve been asked to can create problems.

Tion was jailed for 16 months for stamping on a man’s head, which was caught on CCTV.

In his new song, he seems to allude to the event, rapping about security footage and claiming his lawyer invoked a religious defense, saying ‘Jesus’ when explaining his actions.

In a 2021 interview with The Guardian, Tion shared his thoughts on being in prison, saying people might judge him without understanding the difficult circumstances he’s faced.

Have you ever felt completely trapped, like you have nowhere left to turn? It’s similar to what happens to people in wartime – it can reveal a side of their personality they didn’t know existed, a side that isn’t their usual self.

I feel like I was singled out as a warning to others. Out of the fourteen people accused alongside me, I was the only one sent to jail, likely because my case received more public attention. It seems the police weren’t interested in us being found not guilty; they wanted convictions.

Wayne, also known as T Wizzy, is a London-based artist who gained popularity with his 2021 song “Body,” a collaboration with Russ Millions.

This song was the first drill track to reach number one in the UK charts, but it caused worry due to its violent content and mentions of knives – referred to as ‘shanks’ in the lyrics.

During his appearance on the show Chicken Shop Date in 2022, rapper Bandokay talked about his success, saying he’d bought Rolex watches for his friends as a kind of reward.

Kemani Duggan, known as Bandokay, is now finding that his expensive belongings don’t matter, as he’s currently in prison for five years.

The son of Mark Duggan, a drill rapper, was sent to prison after possessing a handgun, which he claimed was for his own safety. Mark Duggan’s death, caused by police gunfire, led to widespread riots in London.

Bandokay admitted to having a Zastava M57 pistol, a self-loading handgun that uses 7.62mm Tokarev ammunition.

He also admitted to owning 22 rounds of ammunition with intent to cause fear of violence.

Bandokay previously confessed to illegally possessing a gun and ammunition from February 19th to March 21st, 2023. He admitted he didn’t have the required license for them.

The court heard that Bandokay had the weapon with him to frighten anyone who might attack him due to his popularity as a rapper.

From 1961 to the early 1990s, the Zastava Arms model 57 was the official sidearm used by the Yugoslav People’s Army.

The court heard that Bandokay was a leading figure in the Original Farm Boys (OFB), a gang based in North London.
