The curse of The Wanted: As Max George reveals he’s been hospitalised with ‘heart issues’ how the boyband has plagued by tragedy

As I delve into the lives of these young men who once formed The Wanted, I am struck by their resilience and determination to overcome adversity. Nathan Sykes, for instance, has bravely faced cyberbullying head-on, standing tall against the hate campaign that targeted him simply because he was falsely linked to another celebrity. His courage in speaking out about this issue serves as a beacon of hope for others facing online harassment.

On Thursday, Max George disclosed that he’s currently in the hospital due to a heart problem, stating that he is scheduled for surgery during the holiday season.

In more recent times, the musician, aged 36, has faced challenging periods, battling alcohol problems, managing his psychological well-being, and grieving over the passing of his bandmate, Tom Parker.

In the year 2009, the formation of the band The Wanted propelled Max George, Tom Parker, Siva Kaneswaran, Jay McGuiness, and Nathan Sykes into fame.

In the Noughties, they rapidly rose to become one of the most prominent British boybands, and they even succeeded in conquering America with their smash hit single titled “Glad You Came.

Over the subsequent years, they encountered numerous difficulties, grappling with illnesses, assaults, and substance abuse problems. Among these hardships, they sadly lost their member Tom due to cancer in 2022.

Now TopMob takes a look at the miseries that have blighted the band’s success.

Max George

Struggling through my own dark battles with depression, alcohol addiction, and the tragic loss of my bandmate, I find myself bracing for another challenge: a heart surgery right over the holiday season.

The singer acknowledged that he feels fortunate it was detected when it was, as he disclosed his recent health crisis last evening.

Supporters feel deeply saddened and anxious, worried about his condition as he undergoes a hospital stay and a complicated treatment around the holiday season.

Max has kept secret the specific nature of his heart issue; he merely mentioned that it was discovered through tests following a spell of illness and subsequent hospitalization.

He told fans: ‘Hey everyone, Yesterday I felt really unwell and was taken in to hospital.

‘Unfortunately after some tests they’ve found that I have some issues with my heart.

I’ve got quite a few exams ahead to assess the severity of the issues and figure out which operation is necessary for my recovery.

Over the next several weeks or months, things are likely to be challenging… And to my dismay, I find myself spending Christmas in a hospital bed, which was not part of my original plans!

Once more, I find myself enveloped in a sea of affection and encouragement from my exceptional partner Maisie [Smith], her family, mine, and my dear friends. Rest assured, I am thriving in this nurturing environment and am completely content.

Despite the significant surprise and undeniably a temporary setback, I’m determined to face it head-on with everything I possess! I consider myself extremely fortunate that it was detected early.

I won’t keep you updated excessively in the upcoming weeks, as I’ll likely be spending most of my time resting for about a month. There isn’t too much happening here, so let’s continue on this journey together! Lots of love, Max x

Over the years, Max has been transparent about his struggle against excessive drinking and alcohol addiction. Earlier, he confessed that on a single evening, he consumed approximately ten pints and three bottles of wine.

Previously, the performer disclosed that he employed alcohol as a means of coping with the glare of the limelight and managing his anxiety at its peak level.

The musician has also shared insights about his struggle with severe depression following the indefinite break of his band, The Wanted.

Max underwent a series of brain scans at the hospital due to his deteriorating health, yet he was oblivious that his bodily ailments stemmed from an underlying mental condition.

During an episode of the Private Parts podcast featuring Jamie Laing and Francis Boulle, Max shared that he experienced a three-month span in his life where he was unable to step outside his apartment without becoming ill.

Feeling overwhelmed, I found myself unable to move. This led me to seek medical attention at the hospital where they conducted scans on my brain due to depression.

In addition, Max disclosed that ten years back, he came close to losing his eyesight due to an eye infection, necessitating the removal of a portion from his left eye.

Apart from that, he was experiencing vision difficulties with his right eye. At one point, he mentioned, “My right eye seems to be failing me. It’s my left eye that does most of the seeing.

Tom Parker

In October 2020, a shocking announcement was made within the musical community as Tom revealed his diagnosis of stage 4 glioblastoma, leaving him with only a year left to live.

11 months ago, in the chilly days of September 2021, I had the fortune to witness him perform at the Stand Up 2 Cancer show held at the grand Royal Albert Hall. Even then, with the confirmation that his tumor had stabilized, he embarked on a Greatest Hits tour alongside his bandmates. I was absolutely thrilled to be part of this incredible journey!

On March 30, 2022, he passed away at the tender age of 33, with his beloved wife Kelsey and their two little ones left behind.

As his final moments approached, the singer tuned in to the classic Oasis song “Live Forever,” which hails from their groundbreaking debut album titled Definitely Maybe.

With a deep sense of sorrow, we are announcing that Tom passed away tranquilly this day, surrounded by his beloved family members.

We’re devastated. Tom was the heart of our universe, and it’s hard for us to envision life without his radiant grin and vibrant spirit.

We deeply appreciate the abundance of affection and encouragement, and now, let’s come together to keep Tom’s spirit vibrant so it can continue to guide his lovely kids.

She continued by expressing gratitude towards all those who tended to Tom while he was sick, mentioning that he valiantly battled the ailment right up until its conclusion.

The official Instagram post from the band stated: “We, the entire Wanted family, are heartbroken over the unexpected and early death of our band member Tom Parker. He passed away this afternoon peacefully, with his loved ones and bandmates around him.

I had the immense privilege of being a loving spouse to Kelsey, a devoted father to Aurelia and Bodhi, and a cherished sibling. The void left by my departure is indescribable; it’s a profound loss and sorrow that lingers within us all. Forever enshrined in our hearts, I remain.

Jay McGuiness

In the mere three months following The Wanted’s disbandment in January 2014, Jay found himself in a harrowing situation where he was threatened with a knife.

During a vacation, the musician (who later became renowned in the realm of musical theater) was spending time with Siva in Denver, Colorado. Suddenly, they were confronted by an assailant.

As the duo exited the movie theater after enjoying Transcendence, they found themselves confronted by an aggressive individual who threatened them with a knife and demanded money.

As reported by TMZ, the individual who attacked them initially requested some money. Siva complied, handing over a few dollars, but later asked for even more and made threatening gestures with a weapon.

With misinformation spiralling, Jay was quick to clear up the confusion on X/Twitter.

He shared: ‘To reassure you, we were NOT stabbed, but a guy in Denver did pull a knife out on us – do not worry, we were lucky & we still love Denver.’

Siva Kaneswaran

Five months ago, Siva had a harrowing experience being threatened with a knife. Regrettably, he encountered another attack recently.

In the bustling streets of New York, specifically Chelsea, our musician found himself as a witness to a disturbing scene – a man assaulting a woman who appeared to be his girlfriend. Moved by compassion, he took action and chose to step in.

As per accounts, Siva requested the aggressor to cool down, however, the infuriated individual retorted: ‘This has nothing to do with you!’

Still, Siva stood firm and bravely tried to ward off the attacker, allowing the woman to escape safely.

In turn he ended up getting punched in the face and was left with a black eye.

At the time of the incident, Siva shared with InTouch, “I’m not a hero; I merely aimed to keep her from getting struck.

After being away from the spotlight, Siva teamed up with Max once more, creating The Wanted 2.0. The rest of the original bandmates chose not to participate in this endeavor.

Initially, it was quite intriguing to see that Max and Siva were not the most intimate members within their musical group, as they both openly acknowledged this fact.

The duo had a notable rift occur upon the disbandment, as Max attributed the breakup to mounting strife within the group, which left the others displeased.

Specifically, Siva expressed his displeasure earlier, when he disclosed that the remainder of the team first learned about the interview through social media. He labeled it as ‘disappointing’ and ‘inappropriate’.

Additionally, Max clarified that the process of filming their E! channel reality show, The Wanted Life, created significant challenges, particularly due to strained relationships involving band member Siva’s fiancée, Nareesha McCaffrey.

In reply, Siva countered Max’s statements as “completely unfounded and extremely unfair” and confessed that he was taken aback by the interview.

Nathan Sykes

Nathan openly discussed the negative impact cyberbullies had on him, as he became a target of an online hate campaign following his romantic connection with X Factor finalist Cher Lloyd in 2010.

When Nathan was only seventeen, he faced criticism after a rumor emerged during the television talent show competition.

To clarify, I’d like to set the record straight. Contrary to some rumors, there was no romantic involvement between us, and that remains unchanged. However, our followers have made it abundantly clear that they are not pleased with such speculations.

Nathan clarified to The Razz, “The tale of me dating Cher Lloyd was entirely fabricated. By the time I encountered her in the studio, that gossip had been circulating for roughly three weeks.

‘We said, “Hello.” And Cher said, “You’re meant to be my boyfriend. Nice to meet you.”

‘It affected my popularity. I lost about 6000 followers on Twitter and she got abusive tweets.’

The following year, he discussed cyberbullying by saying: ‘Being in a place where I’ve encountered hatred from individuals who might not be fans of the band.’

In the heat of the One Direction dispute among some band members, I found myself inexplicably receiving threatening messages and such from young fans, which left me rather bewildered.

It turned out that they connected me to the band, although I wasn’t aware of it at first. However, the manner in which they express themselves online is quite different – if they had said such things directly to my face, they would never do so.

‘They possess the ability, nearly, to conceal themselves behind a computer screen, allowing them to be more open with their expressions and considerably rude.’
