The Crow director mocks reboot’s box-office flop

As a gamer with a deep appreciation for cinema, particularly the original “The Crow,” I’ve been following the saga of its reboot with a mix of anticipation and trepidation. Having grown up watching Brandon Lee’s haunting portrayal of Eric Draven, the idea of a new version felt like an unwelcome intrusion into my nostalgic sanctuary.

The director of the original The Crow movie has mocked the new reboot’s box office failure.

The latest movie based on the comic book has received mixed reactions upon its release, earning just $9.6 million worldwide against a production cost of $50 million, and garnering mostly negative criticisms.

Alex Proyas, originally behind the 1994 film featuring the late Brandon Lee, is now targeting a reboot of that production.

On his Facebook post, the director expressed his opinion saying, “I felt the remake was merely a money-hungry attempt. Yet, not much money seems to be involved.”

Previously, Proyas has expressed his disapproval towards the reboot, going so far as to write several critical reviews about the latest film and making the statement: “Amazing. The critics are merciless.”

A while back, in another humorous social media post, he also circulated an image with the message: “Safely avoiding watching ‘Crow’ 2024 today.”

Previously this year, Proyas voiced his disapproval of the recently released film on Facebook, stating (as reported by Variety): “I can’t find pleasure in the negativity surrounding another filmmaker’s work. I believe that the cast and crew were genuinely well-intentioned, just as we all are when working on any film.”

Allow me to add no further words on this subject, for I believe the fans’ reactions eloquently convey the depth of their feelings. “The Crow” transcends being merely a film; it is a tribute to Brandon Lee, who sacrificed his life during its production, and a symbol of the brilliance he never got to fully express due to his untimely demise. It is his lasting legacy. May it continue to be cherished as such.

In an exciting twist, I can’t wait to see Bill Skarsgård reprise his role as the title character in this new version. After being resurrected, he embarks on a mission of vengeance for both himself and his beloved girlfriend, FKA Twigs, who met a tragic end alongside him.

In a less-than-impressive start, the film received a rating of only 18% on Rotten Tomatoes (which is below the usual 20% threshold), and was frequently criticized for falling short when compared to the 1994 movie by many reviewers.

At the beginning of this year, Skarsgård expressed his dislike for the ending of the reboot, saying to Esquire, “I was more inclined towards something conclusive instead.”

The Crow is out now in cinemas.
