The Croods: A New Age – Global Streaming Success 5 Years After Theatrical Release

Five years after its theatrical release, the comedy sequel The Croods: A New Age, starring Ryan Reynolds and Nicolas Cage, is proving to be a hit with streaming audiences. The original The Croods movie, a funny animated look at life in prehistoric times, first came out in 2013.

Currently, The Croods: A New Age is the third most popular movie on Netflix worldwide. It’s only behind Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, which was just added on December 12th, and My Secret Santa. The Croods sequel is performing better than films like Jay Kelly, Death Wish, Troll 2, The Hustle, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Love and Wine, and KPop Demon Hunters.

I’m really excited to see how well A New Age is doing internationally! It might not be a huge hit in the U.S. right now, but it’s topping the charts in so many other places – I’ve noticed it’s number one in countries like Brazil, Colombia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Mexico, New Zealand, Nigeria, Paraguay, Poland, and Serbia. It’s amazing to see its global appeal!

In The Croods: A New Age, Nicolas Cage and Ryan Reynolds return as the voices of Grug and Guy. The first film established a rivalry between Grug, who feels threatened by Guy’s intelligence and the changes he brings to the Crood family. The voice cast also includes Catherine Keener as Ugga, Grug’s wife, Emma Stone as their daughter Eep, Clark Duke as their son Thunk, and Cloris Leachman as Gran.

In the new movie, the Croods and Guy stumble upon what looks like the perfect place to settle down. But they soon realize another family, the Bettermans – Hope (voiced by Leslie Mann), Phil (voiced by Peter Dinklage), and their daughter Dawn (voiced by Kelly Marie Tran) – already lives there. The Bettermans are more modern and sophisticated, which creates tension and challenges for both families as they try to share the land.

Although The Croods: A New Age isn’t typically ranked among Nicolas Cage’s or his co-stars’ best films, it was generally well-received. It currently has a 76% approval rating from critics and a very positive 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film earned $215.9 million at the box office with a budget of $65 million, making it a financial success. This was particularly noteworthy because it was released in November 2020, a time when many movie theaters were closed or just beginning to reopen due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This film was the first animated movie shown in theaters after the start of the pandemic, and the first family movie to earn over $200 million since Sonic the Hedgehog came out in early 2020, before the pandemic began.

Despite being released during the unusual circumstances of 2020, The Croods: A New Age continues to be popular with viewers, proving its lasting appeal five years later.
