The Creep Tapes begins with an episode that feels pretty similar to the film (episode 1 review)
As a die-hard fan of the Creep series, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement with Mark Duplass once again donning his chilling Peachfuzz persona in The Creep Tapes. With each new installment, it feels like stepping into an old friend’s company – a sinister, twisted old friend, that is.
In the upcoming series, “The Creep Tapes”, Mark Duplass once again assumes the chilling and enigmatic role of his serial killer character. Known by some as “Peachfuzz” due to the wolf mask he dons in the initial movies, this time the story unfolds in smaller, individual episodes. Each installment is structured around a tape supposedly discovered from the killer’s past, emulating the style of found-footage from the films.
The initial episode commences with “Mike,” and I must confess that this specific installment seems somewhat similar to the films. It presents a familiar scenario where the antagonist, whom I’ll refer to as ‘Peachfuzz’ for convenience, entices an ambitious filmmaker into a spooky woodland cabin under false pretenses of helping produce a coaching video. Despite the circumstances growing increasingly odd, Peachfuzz continues to dangle $1,000 in front of Mike as a means of control.
In previous films like “Creep” and “Creep 2,” Peachfuzz quickly becomes disconcerting because he doesn’t adhere to typical filmmaking norms. This character might eventually resort to violence, but he seems to enjoy every moment leading up to it. During an interview with creators Mark Duplass and Patrick Brice, Brice likened this behavior to a cat playing with a mouse. Once the mouse is dead, the cat needs to find something else to amuse itself. The same can be said here. After committing a murder, the tension dissipates.
In the first-person perspective as a gamer:
To put it another way, the storyline has become somewhat predictable, as if following a routine, but what keeps us hooked is the excitement of discovering how our character, Mike, will arrive at a point where he understands he’s trapped in an inescapable predicament with a dangerous individual.
The initial pair of episodes from the series titled “The Creep Tapes” are currently available on both Shudder and AMC+. Fresh installments premiere every Friday.
