Over five seasons, the Dutton family in , faced many challenges while trying to protect their ranch and stay together. Now that the show has finished with its final season, viewers interested in learning more about the family’s past can watch two prequel series that explore their history.
The show 1883 tells the story of how the Dutton family acquired Yellowstone Ranch, featuring Isabel May, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and Sam Elliott. 1923 is another prequel to Yellowstone, following up on the events of 1883, and stars Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, and Brandon Sklenar. It continues to explore the Dutton family’s struggles, filled with personal hardship and historical challenges. Viewers might still be curious about how these two shows specifically connect.
How the Duttons Came to Own the Yellowstone in 1883
I’m completely captivated by the story of the Duttons and how they built their life on the Yellowstone Ranch. It’s amazing to think about the struggles and conflicts they faced to get there. The series begins with them leaving Texas, specifically Fort Worth, with a big dream: to find a new home and start fresh in Oregon. James Dutton, the family patriarch, and his family were really driven to create a better future for themselves, and it’s fascinating to see the journey unfold.
The family’s carefully laid plans are thrown into chaos when the Lakota tribe attacks, seeking revenge for the killing of some of their people – a deed the Duttons and the travelers didn’t commit. During the attack, James’s daughter, Elsa, is struck by an arrow.
Despite calming things down, James and Margaret understand Elsa is dying. She requests to be buried in a specific place, and a Crow tribe healer tells her about a beautiful valley called Paradise in Montana. James rushes her there, leaving the others to follow at their own pace. Elsa passes away peacefully in her father’s arms and is buried in the valley, bringing to a close one of the most memorable historical dramas of recent years.
How 1923 Expands and Explores The Dutton Family Tree
Following the events of 1883, the Dutton family faced many hardships. After Elsa’s death, James Dutton passed away ten years later, leaving Margaret and their three children to fight for survival on the challenging Montana ranch. Desperate for help, Margaret wrote to James’ brother, Jacob, asking him to come west. Though he eventually arrived, it was too late – Margaret had already succumbed to the harsh winter and passed away.
Cara (Helen Mirren) and her husband look after the ranch and are the last remaining link to the events of 1883. They’ve worked on the land ever since and raised James and Margaret’s children, John and Spencer, as their own. Many viewers believed John and his wife, Emma, would eventually become the parents of John Dutton II and the grandparents of the current family head, John Dutton III (Kevin Costner).
During the first season, tragedy strikes the family. In episode three, John is killed in a shootout between ranchers and sheepherders, caught in the gunfire from Banner Creighton’s machine gun. Then, in episode five, Emma, overwhelmed with grief, takes her own life, leaving behind their son, Jack.
The rest of the season focuses on the consequences of the attack, leaving many questions unanswered. Spencer is still traveling, and the Dutton family is in debt to Donald Whitfield, who covered their property taxes.
What Happened Between 1883 and 1923?
The series 1883 ended with Elsa’s death and James Dutton starting the Yellowstone ranch near her gravesite – the very same cemetery viewers see in Yellowstone. By the beginning of 1923, both Margaret and James have passed away. While this feels like a big leap forward with many unknowns, Yellowstone includes flashbacks that shed light on these earlier generations.
The fourth season of Yellowstone and 1883 came out at the same time, so it was fitting that Yellowstone included flashbacks referencing the prequel series that same season. In the Yellowstone episode “Half the Money,” there’s a scene set in 1893 featuring Tim McGraw as James Dutton and his sons, John (who appeared younger, as seen in 1883) and Spencer.
It was incredible to see James and his son riding through the Yellowstone, coming across the Native American tribe who originally called this land home. Their leader, Red Bear, had a simple but powerful request – to bury his father there, so he could finally rest peacefully. James, being the kind man he is, immediately agreed and even offered them some beef to share. The whole scene was just beautiful, especially with the snow all around, and it really showed the respect and friendship James had built with the local tribes. It was a moving moment, seeing these two cultures connect like that.
In the episode “No Kindness for the Coward,” we see a flashback to 1893 showing the death of James Dutton. The scene also reveals what the Yellowstone ranch looked like in its early days – a much smaller and simpler home than it is now. Spencer, John, and Margaret are at dinner, praying for James’s safety while he confronts a group of horse thieves. Though James manages to deal with the thieves, he’s fatally wounded, and the scene ends with Margaret’s horrified screams.
What Comes Next for the Dutton Family Saga?
Fans can expect more shows set in the world of Yellowstone starting in 2026. While many of these new series will take place after the original show’s storyline, some will be direct sequels—like Marshals and Dutton Ranch. There’s also a plan for another prequel that will explore the history connecting 1923 to the original Yellowstone.
The new series, 1944, will tell the story of John Dutton II, the father of the current patriarch. We first saw John’s birth in the finale of 1923, and 1944 is expected to be the last in Taylor Sheridan’s series of prequel shows about the Dutton family’s history. Set near the end of World War II, the show will focus on how the war impacted the Duttons and their ranch.
This new series will bring the story full circle, finally revealing the events that led to the world of Yellowstone. It focuses on John Dutton II, the last of his line, and his prequel will likely explain the strained relationships within the family – particularly with his son, whose own children would later experience similar conflicts. The show essentially returns to where it all began.
1883 and 1923 are available to stream on Paramount+.
