Given the huge success of The Conjuring: Last Rites earlier this year, it’s no surprise Warner Bros. is continuing the franchise. According to Variety, a new prequel is in development that will focus on the beginnings of Ed and Lorraine Warren’s career as paranormal investigators.
Following the huge success of Last Rites, which earned over $487 million, rumors began circulating that the horror series wouldn’t end after all. Although initially presented as the final film, reports suggested future movies would be released in stages, similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, we were surprised by how soon those plans seem to be moving forward.
Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson probably won’t be in the new Conjuring prequel. The film is a backstory showing how the Warrens first began their work, so new actors will likely play the younger versions of the characters.
Besides working on a prequel, Warner Bros. is also planning a TV series to expand the franchise. While details are still limited, the show, which will stream on HBO Max, is expected to follow the storyline established in the films. James Wan will produce through his company, Atomic Monster, and Nancy Won will lead the series as executive producer, writer, and showrunner. Won has previously worked on popular shows like Supernatural, Jessica Jones, and Little Fires Everywhere.
Is Warner Bros. Overestimating the Appeal of a ‘Conjuring’ Prequel?

Warner Bros. Pictures
It’s not surprising Warner Bros. wants to revisit The Conjuring series – it’s become the highest-grossing horror franchise ever. However, they might be too optimistic about its continued success. A key factor in the strong performance of Last Rites was that it was marketed as the last film starring Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson.
Dedicated fans showed up in huge numbers to celebrate the couple’s final appearance together. Their relationship inspired countless TikTok videos, online artwork, and heartfelt tributes from people who had enjoyed their work for years. The outpouring of support felt like a major moment for the horror community, and it helped the movie succeed financially even though critics didn’t love it.
Since the upcoming prequel will likely feature new actors playing the Warrens, fans may be hesitant to embrace them. This could lead to negative reactions affecting the film’s success, so Warner Bros. needs to be very careful with both the direction of the movie and the casting choices. The fate of the franchise may depend on this film, meaning the new actors need to have a strong on-screen connection, at least as good as, if not better than, Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson had.
It’s still too early to say what the future holds, but you can currently rent or buy The Conjuring: Last Rites on most digital platforms. While a specific date hasn’t been announced, it’s expected to be available on HBO Max around late November.
