Even though it seemed like the story of The Conjuring ended with Last Rites, Warner Bros. and New Line have announced they’re now working on a prequel to continue the series.
Variety reports that Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg, the screenwriters for The Nun II (2023), are writing the scripts. Rodrigue Huart, who directed the short film Transylvanie (2023), is currently in discussions to direct the project.
So far, no new films have been officially confirmed, and it’s uncertain whether Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson will reprise their roles. However, with The Conjuring: Last Rites earning $487 million worldwide, it’s evident that audiences still want to see more stories about paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.

Director Michael Chaves told ComicBook in October that Last Rites would be the last movie in the series, definitively ending the story. However, like many other horror franchises – including Saw, Lake Placid, and The Omen – it seems he was mistaken, as these series have all continued with new installments despite previous claims of being finished.
Not much is known about the new Conjuring prequel yet, but it will likely show how Ed and Lorraine Warren first started working as demonologists. Because of this, new actors will probably play the roles of Ed and Lorraine in the film.

After twelve years of working on The Conjuring movies, Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson have announced they are leaving the series. In November 2024, Farmiga shared a touching message on Instagram, praising her colleague and co-star.
About five years ago, my partner and I signed a contract with Warner Bros. to play Ed and Lorraine Warren in a film.
Today’s the last day of filming with him. I have another 12 hours of fun and craziness before he wraps up, takes off his costume, changes his look, and says goodbye to our on-screen marriage. It’s definitely bittersweet! Working with Patrick Wilson has been amazing – a truly wonderful 12 years. I really appreciate you, Patrick!

Wilson also marked the conclusion of the Conjuring series on his social media, expressing that he felt deeply moved as the franchise came to an end.
It’s impossible to thank everyone who helped create these movies – so many people contributed, and so many more have enjoyed watching them! To Vera Farmiga, I don’t even know where to begin – our on-screen marriage has surprisingly lasted longer than some real ones, and I truly cherish working with you. And to Michael Chaves, you’ve done an amazing job taking over, and I’m incredibly excited to see how everything comes together.
What started as one movie, The Conjuring, has grown into a complete cinematic universe. Currently, there are nine films in the series, including The Conjuring (2013), Annabelle (2014), The Conjuring 2 (2016), Annabelle: Creation (2017), The Nun (2018), Annabelle Comes Home (2019), The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021), The Nun II (2023), and the upcoming The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025).
