The Chicago PD Season 12 premiere reminded us that tomorrow isn't guaranteed

As a seasoned gamer who has navigated through countless virtual worlds and storylines, I can confidently say that the Chicago PD Season 12 premiere was a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Having binge-watched Chicago PD for years, I’ve grown attached to the characters, and their lives have become as real to me as the games I play.

In a simple and engaging way, let me rephrase that sentence for you: The first episode of Chicago PD‘s twelfth season didn’t fall short of expectations. It not only brought us up to speed about each character’s current situation but also conveyed an essential message.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for Chicago PD Season 12, Episode 1.

In the Season 12 premiere of Chicago PD, it was anticipated that we’d meet the latest permanent addition to the Intelligence unit. The character turned out to be Emily Martel, portrayed by Victori Cartagena, who seemed ideally suited for the team. Notably, she held a detective rank, making her the first such member on the team following Upton’s departure, as there were no more detectives left in the unit previously.

Martel arrived with a profound personal history. After taking a medical leave, she found herself returning following the tragic death of her partner who passed in her presence. This incident deeply affected her, causing her to wrestle with many questions, particularly as feelings of survivor’s guilt took hold.

It was foreshadowing of things to come. Things aren’t looking good for Ruzek now.

What happened to Emily Martel in Chicago PD Season 12?

Martel’s time in the series was limited, deliberately so. It served as a stark reminder of mortality, emphasizing that death can strike at any moment. Given the numerous character rescues throughout the series, such reminders are essential.

On my way back to the station with Ruzez, who had convinced me to join the team, we heard gunfire erupting in our neighborhood. Just like any gamer would do in a high-stakes situation, we decided to investigate. Unfortunately, as Ruzez was turning his back, I was struck down – fatally hit right in the head.

In the upcoming episode, it’s almost certain that Ruzek will be significantly impacted, as he grapples with a mix of emotions related to his personal safety and the tragic loss of life before him. These feelings may include fear, guilt, rage, and bewilderment – emotions I believe anyone in his position might experience.

It’d be great if Ruzek doesn’t get too deeply embroiled in a complex situation, but it’s crucial for Chicago PD to explore how such a death affects the officer who witnesses it. In other words, they have an opportunity to delve into the emotional impact of this event on the cop present at the scene.

Chicago PD airs on Wednesdays at 10/9c on NBC. Catch up the following day on Peacock.
