Despite focusing on suspicious neighbors and growing paranoia – and suggesting that suburban life isn’t always perfect – the TV show ‘The ‘Burbs’ didn’t feel like a short-lived project. Over its first eight episodes, the show expanded its central mystery, hinted at a larger conspiracy within the neighborhood, and left plenty of possibilities open for a second season.
According to Variety, Peacock has officially renewed The ‘Burbs for a second season. The series was a hit, racking up over 1.7 billion minutes viewed and staying in the Top 10 on the streaming service for four weeks after it premiered on February 8th.
It’s not shocking that The ‘Burbs is getting a reboot, but it’s a noteworthy one. Whether revivals and reimaginings succeed depends on whether they make a good case for existing in a new form, and this series had a stronger reason to be made than many other shows based on familiar properties. Rather than just turning the original movie into a longer, episodic version, the series uses the suburban setting to create a continuing mystery. It follows Samira and Rob, played by Keke Palmer and Jack Whitehall, as they move into Rob’s childhood home and quickly discover that things are much stranger—and potentially dangerous—than simple neighborhood drama.
Season 2 of The ‘Burbs is set to build on the story established in the first season. The finale hinted at a bigger mystery involving the homeowners association and the dangers hidden within Hinkley Hills, providing a clear direction for the show’s continuation instead of simply prolonging it. This is important for Peacock, as a mystery-comedy like The ‘Burbs thrives when audiences feel the writers have a plan for future reveals, rather than just keeping the story going without a clear purpose. Earlier this year, creator Cate Palmer discussed her vision for the new season, stating:
I’d be really disappointed if the show didn’t get another season – there’s still so much story left to explore! Now that the team is finally together and understands their purpose, a much bigger threat has emerged. It’s time to jump into action and start solving mysteries, just like in Scooby-Doo!
Sarah Palmer and Patton Oswalt will reprise their roles as Samira and Rob. Paula Pell, Mark Proksch, and Julia Duffy are also expected to return to the world of Hinkley Hills. Celeste Hughey will continue as the show’s creator and executive producer, with production support from Seth MacFarlane’s Fuzzy Door and Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment.

The show The ‘Burbs successfully combined dark humor with the over-the-top nature of suburban life, a tricky combination to pull off. By keeping the same creative team, Peacock has a good opportunity to improve on the strengths of the first season instead of having to start over.
Peacock hasn’t announced when Season 2 will arrive, but they’ve confirmed that The ‘Burbs was a hit. The show resonated with viewers enough to get another season, and now, with the first season’s cliffhanger ending, it has a chance to build on that success and prove it wasn’t just a fleeting moment.
