The Breaking Bad Episode Fans Hated That Changed Walt Forever
While many consider Breaking Bad as a television masterpiece, not every episode can be considered a work of genius. For instance, the tenth episode from season 3, titled “Fly,” is sometimes criticized for its unique script. However, this episode is significant because it showcases a crucial turning point for one of the most outstanding characters in Breaking Bad, portrayed brilliantly by Bryan Cranston as Walter White.
The word “Fly” doesn’t contribute significantly to advancing the plot, but it provides a moment of respite for viewers as it develops certain storylines for characters Walt and Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul). Walt’s scheme to generate income for his family has evolved beyond his initial objectives, leading to an emotional monologue from him.
“Fly” Is The First Time Walt Admits He’s Taken Things Too Far In Breaking Bad
Walt’s speech is laced with regret
In “Fly,” Walt is primarily focused on capturing the show’s title creature, which he refers to as a “contaminant” for their meth-manufacturing process, informing Jesse about this. To shake off his partner’s growing paranoia, Jesse secretly adds sedatives into Walt’s coffee. The effects of the caffeine might be counteracting it, as the sedatives take some time to work.
During that half-awake, half-asleep phase, a remarkably frank side of Walt emerges, leading him to give an emotionally charged speech. In this speech, he expresses his deep regret that he strayed too far from his initial goal and hints at a wish that he had passed away at the most ideal moment, when his cancer could have been perfectly timed.
“I missed it. There was some perfect moment, and
it passed me right by. I had to have enough to leave
them. That was the whole point. This doesn’t make any sense if I
didn’t have enough. But it had to be before she found
out. Skyler. It had to be…before that.”

As a film enthusiast, I previously thought that Walter White always maintained a firm grip on his own reasons for action. However, in the movie “Fly,” there was a moment when he revealed some inner thoughts. This disclosure offers a glimpse into Walt’s mind, enabling viewers to reassess his feelings towards his predicament and how he’s coping with it.
Walt’s speech subtly emphasizes the difficulty he experiences in leaving behind his latest venture. Gradually, it consumes everything precious to him, yet despite the distress it causes, he struggles to quit cooking meth. He excels at this craft, and the desire for acclaim in his profession is simply too powerful.
I Remain Convinced That “Fly” Isn’t A Bad Episode, It’s Just The Worst Breaking Bad Has To Offer
IMDb still gives “Fly” a pretty good score
The “Fly” episode of Breaking Bad is considered the least favorable by viewers on IMDb, as their ratings are what determine its score. However, despite this low ranking, it doesn’t mean that the episode is bad. In fact, it has a score of 7.9/10, which is still an above-average rating.
While every series inevitably has an episode that might not rank as highly, it doesn’t necessarily mean that such episodes lack value entirely. To put it simply, there are certainly Breaking Bad episodes more praised than “Fly,” but this particular episode provides a unique perspective on Walter White and sheds light on his inner struggles, which he usually keeps hidden from others.
As a die-hard film enthusiast, I firmly believe that even the lowest-rated episode of “Breaking Bad” was worth creating, given its significant impact on such an outstanding character. To me, Walt and Jesse’s chase after the fly wasn’t dull at all; instead, it managed to infuse humor into the dark descent of Walter White’s character in a genuinely entertaining way.
