The Boys star was elated with that Kimiko-Frenchie kiss: "I do ship Kimchie"

As a long-time fan of The Boys, I have eagerly awaited each new season with bated breath. The cliffhanger ending of season 4 left me feeling deflated and uncertain about where the story could go next. But amidst the darkness and despair, there were moments of pure joy that reminded me why I fell in love with this show in the first place.

In the fourth installment of “The Boys,” Homelander, a sociopathic superhero, seized control of the US government, leaving our protagonists in a state of dispersion and capture. The grim finale leaves us with a sense of despair, but we remain optimistic that the story will take a turn for the better when the series resumes for its fifth and last season.

There were a few delightful instances in that long stretch. For example, after four seasons of flirting and coming close, Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) and Frenchie (Tomer Capone) finally exchanged a kiss in the latest season. According to Fukuhara’s interview with Entertainment Weekly, she let out an adorable sigh when she discovered this development in the script, acknowledging that it had taken a whole season to reach that milestone.

On the day when we were filming that kiss, I didn’t realize how beautiful it would be. I was blown away. I didn’t know how they were going to shoot it in the script. It just said they lean in for a kiss. I knew it would be special, but I didn’t know it was going to be this backlit beautiful thing. I was so happy that they got their moment in that way. It was beautifully shot.

The kiss between Kimiko and Frenchie was overdue, some would argue unduly so. Since the onset of their relationship in the first season, Frenchie rapidly mastered sign language, enabling him to converse with the mute Kimiko. By the end of the second season, they were seen leaving for a dance date together, an unmistakable indication of their budding romance.

In the third season, their friendship returned to its previous level. Then, in the fourth, Kimiko encouraged Frenchie to pursue a relationship with Colin, an old acquaintance of his. Fukuhara commented, “I assumed, ‘Well, I see. It seems that won’t be happening.’ I was somewhat let down because I’ve always wanted them to be together. But if they weren’t going to be a couple, I could accept it.”

Many individuals expressed their disappointment with Frenchie’s romance with Colin for various reasons. Unsurprisingly, some were displeased by the portrayal of bisexuality and homosexuality in their beloved superhero series. Tomer Capone shared his sadness over this reaction, stating, “I don’t want to give it much attention because I understand it stems from people’s insecurities about themselves, their egos, masculinity, or whatever it may be.” However, he also received numerous heartfelt messages from viewers praising the representation of a strong bisexual character like Frenchie. Detractors will always exist. I look forward to witnessing them step out of their comfort zone and confront Frenchie in person.

From my perspective as a devoted fan, I believe some viewers found it frustrating when it seemed like Frenchie and Kimiko’s relationship progression led to an unexpected halt before the climax. I’m thinking, what’s the point of all this buildup if they’re going to be separated right after? Their bond had been tenuous since Frenchie’s past actions resulted in the demise of his family and later caused him to work alongside mercenaries. Yet, just as they finally found solace in each other, Homelander’s minions intervened and forcibly separated them. It was a poignant moment that had been brewing for quite some time, but it felt bittersweet given the circumstances.

It sounds like Kimiko will finally use her voice in The Boys season 5

Fukuhara expressed her belief that Kimiko’s first word was flawlessly penned down. She felt that this moment, if portrayed in our show, would be incredibly significant for the series. The reason behind Kimiko’s inability to speak is not due to a physical condition but rather the result of her past traumas. In a critical situation where only her voice could save Frenchie, she is tragically unable to utilize this ability.

After discovering her unique voice, Kikimo seems determined to keep it. Fukuhara shares with EW that she is considering how to make her voice resonate similarly in the last two seasons of the series.

That’s actually something that I think about on a daily basis. I am excited and also a bit nervous because I feel like all four seasons are leading to that moment. There’s a lot of anticipation and excitement towards it, especially from the fans. So I want to do it justice. We’ll see when that moment is.

As a dedicated gamer following “The Boys” series: It’s about time we hear Kimiko’s voice in the upcoming part of this thrilling show! Sadly, we might have to wait for quite some time before that happens. Although season 5 has been confirmed, based on the previous release schedule, it could be as late as 2026 before we get to see it. But who knows? If they surprise us and air it in 2025, I’ll gladly embrace it! In the interim, you can catch up with the first four seasons (alongside the spinoff “Gen V”) on Amazon Prime Video.
