The Boys Is Becoming A Victim Of Its Own Satire In Season 5

For a long time, The Boys cleverly mocked other superhero shows and movies. But it seems the show is now starting to become what it once criticized. Initially, The Boys brilliantly parodied how Marvel and DC constantly expand their universes, with big companies trying to maximize profits from their superhero properties.

As The Boys grew into a larger TV universe with spin-offs like Gen V, it faced the danger of falling into the same traps it often criticized. Luckily, Gen V proved to be a worthy addition, unlike many other unnecessary superhero spin-offs. It strengthened the main story of The Boys while also successfully establishing its own unique character.

Given the popularity of Gen V, expectations were high for Vought Rising, the next spin-off from The Boys. However, after finishing season 5 of The Boys, it’s hard not to notice the show falling into familiar patterns common in other superhero stories. It’s disappointing to see a show that once felt groundbreaking now adopting the very tropes it used to challenge.

The Boys Season 5’s Episode 4 Proves It Has Become The Very Thing It Criticized

Right from the beginning of season 5, The Boys hinted at a history between Soldier Boy and Stormfront. These clues strongly suggested Vought Rising, a prequel series that will explore the origins of both characters – specifically Clara Vought (Stormfront) and Soldier Boy – and their time at Vought in the 1950s.

Early clues about the Vought Rising spinoff were promising and built excitement. However, episode 4 of The Boys season 5 feels like it goes overboard. As this is the last season of The Boys, fans generally expect each episode to move the main story forward.

Episode 4 of The Boys season 5 feels slow and focuses too much on introducing the Vought Rising storyline. Although it has a few standout scenes, the episode mostly feels like a preview of what’s to come, teasing things like Soldier Boy’s past at Fort Harmony and his connection to the enigmatic supe, Quinn.

Like many superhero shows and movies from Marvel and DC, The Boys now feels more focused on building towards future seasons than on delivering a complete story right now. The show originally criticized how superheroes had become products to be sold, but ironically, it’s now doing the same thing – prioritizing future installments over a satisfying present-day narrative.

I’ve been watching The Boys for a while now, and what’s always impressed me is that it avoided the pitfalls that dragged down some of the bigger Marvel and DC projects. It didn’t succumb to ‘superhero fatigue’… at least, not at first. But honestly, I’m seeing hints of that weariness creeping into the current season. While it’s still a critically acclaimed show, and I expect things to improve as the season goes on, I’m a little disappointed with the focus on Soldier Boy’s backstory. I was hoping for a stronger finish, and this feels like a detour.

Soldier Boy’s Spinoff Is Exciting, But The Boys Season 5 Must Progress The Story With Every Episode

Soldier Boy is a hugely popular character in The Boys, so his spin-off series is sure to draw a large audience. This means the fifth season of The Boys doesn’t need to focus on setting up the spin-off in every episode. Given the success of other series like Gen V and The Boys Presents: Diabolical, the upcoming Vought Rising is also expected to be a strong addition to the franchise.

It’s hard to help but wonder if The Boys is prioritizing setting up its spin-off, Vought Rising, over telling a strong, focused story. After four seasons of building towards a conclusion, the show has a lot of loose ends to tie up. Constantly focusing on the spin-off makes it feel like the main story is being spread too thin.

Episode 4 of The Boys season 5 felt like a detour, and that’s usually not ideal, especially in a show’s final season. Strong final seasons typically build suspense with each episode, leading to a powerful conclusion. Hopefully, the rest of season 5 will stay focused on the main storyline and avoid similar filler episodes.
