The Prime Video series has concluded after five seasons. The final episode featured some unexpected twists, and one notable absence, which the show’s creator, Eric Kripke, has now addressed.
Dominique McElligott played Queen Maeve, a superhero parodying Wonder Woman, for the first three seasons of The Boys. Although many viewers anticipated her return in the show’s final episodes – fueled by clips shown before the finale – she didn’t reappear. According to creator Eric Kripke, this was because McElligott has chosen to move away from acting.
Dominique McElligott Has Retired From Acting
I exchange emails with Dom a few times a year, about every six to eight months,” Kripke explained to TV Insider, referring to McElligott. “She reached out to me after the Palisades fires. We occasionally email each other, and I asked her early on, just to get an idea of her availability, if she’d be willing to return for a single day, and I gave her the possible dates.”
He explained that the conversation was very nice and respectful. She simply told him she’d mostly retired from acting, wasn’t really taking on roles anymore, and was already busy during those times.
That was pretty much all there was to it,” Kripke explained. “It was a nice, straightforward scene, but we really wanted to honor the character. She’s important, so we included her in the recap to show a passing of the torch – from Maeve and then Annie to Marie – highlighting a line of strong female characters that began with Maeve.
The Boys Has Ended After 5 Seasons
The showrunner, Kripke, explained they deliberately mentioned the character in the final season because they wanted to acknowledge her presence even though they couldn’t bring her back physically. This makes sense considering how important she was to the story during the first three seasons. Plus, the character was left alive, which is something not all characters on The Boys can claim after five seasons.
Even though the main storyline has finished, the world of The Boys isn’t done yet. A new series, Vought Rising, is being developed and will feature Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy and Aya Cash as Stormfront, showing what happened decades before the original show. There’s also talk of a spin-off series based in Mexico, which could allow surviving characters from The Boys to make guest appearances down the line.
The Boys is streaming on Prime Video.
