The Boys creator Eric Kripke says "the world changed to reflect the show"

As a devoted fan of The Boys, I must say that this subversive series has truly captured my imagination and pushed the boundaries of what is considered “acceptable” in television. The fourth season took political satire to new heights, mirroring real-world events with an uncanny accuracy. It’s almost as if Eric Kripke and his team are psychics, or perhaps they’ve been watching the news a bit too much!

In the realm of “The Boys,” there is arguably no other superhero universe quite as madcap as this one, portrayed on screen. This audacious series doesn’t just reverse the genre, but in its four seasons has raised the bar for graphic violence, gore, and profanity to new extremes; witness the notorious ‘Herogasm’ episode, where a superpowered orgy unfolded. It’s as distasteful as it appears.

In season 4, the program became significantly more politically charged, exploring themes such as authoritarianism and media-driven controversies. As it delved deeper into political satire, it seemed to mirror real-world events more closely. For example, the portrayal of Homelander’s cult-like following bears resemblance to that of Donald Trump, who was recently reelected as the President of the United States for a second term.

For showrunner Eric Kripke, making a brilliant TV show was always the first and foremost goal; the fact that it’s echoed reality in such a stark way came after. “It’s not like we were designing it to reflect reality,” he told Variety. Going into its fifth and final season, The Boys has bizarrely become one of the most culturally significant shows on TV, almost by accident. “But we happen to be making a show about violent authoritarians who present as celebrities. Then suddenly, the world changed to reflect the show, not just in the States – all over the world. Suddenly we found ourselves making one of the most current shows on television.”

Over the course of the production, Kripke chose to incorporate real-life satire into the show. He expressed, “We came to understand that we had both an obligation and a chance to create a program that was extremely current, mirroring reality, and providing a humorous critique on it as much as possible.

Homelander will get even worse in the final season of The Boys

Indeed, one of the pivotal figures in this political drama is Homelander, a superhero with an uncontrollable and insatiable desire for power. As we move toward the final season, Kripke hints that Homelander’s fury will reach its peak. Since the series is coming to an end, the writers are no longer bound by any obligation to preserve life.

As Homelander achieves his desires, his happiness diminishes instead, a fact that leaves him increasingly agitated. This situation sets the stage for heightened tension and intense emotions, with The Boys facing an increasingly challenging task ahead.

Filming for Season 5 of “The Boys” started in November 2024. The final installment isn’t predicted to premiere until 2025, but early 2026 looks probable. In the interim, the spinoff titled “Gen V” will air its second season in 2025!
